  • Patent number: 10145211
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure can relate to an adapter for power and communication connections between electronic devices in a drill string. In embodiments, the adapter can include a first terminal configured to couple with an output terminal of a first tool and a second terminal configured to couple with an input terminal of a second tool. The adapter can further include a power converter that adjusts a voltage received at the first terminal and supplies the adjusted voltage to the second terminal and a communications adapter that converts a signal format of a communications signal received at the first terminal to a second signal format for the second terminal.

  • Patent number: 9816325
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a power isolation adapter which can enable the use of multiple power sources in a bottom hole assembly (BHA) by isolating the power sources on a tool bus while maintaining a communication bus across the BHA. Such power sources may be part of a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) module, such as a mud turbine generator, providing power as a DC signal. The power isolation adapter isolates the power sources by blocking DC signals, but maintains an AC communication bus across the BHA. The ability to use multiple power sources in a BHA thus allows for more complex BHA configurations that normally could not be powered using a single power source.

  • Publication number: 20070030167
Abstract: A system for bidirectional communication between the downhole equipment and a processor subsystem at the earth's surface, including: a section of wired drill pipes comprising at least the upper portion of a string of drill pipes, and forming at least a portion of a bidirectional communication link between downhole equipment and the top of the string of drill pipes; a drive string portion of the drill string, mechanically coupleable with the topmost wired drill pipe; a drive mechanism mechanically coupleable with said drive string portion, for rotating the drill string; a first wireless transceiver subsystem mounted on the drive string portion of the drill string, for rotation in conjunction with the drill string; a cable, electrically coupled between the top joint of the topmost wired drill pipe and the first transceiver subsystem; and a second wireless transceiver subsystem coupled with the uphole processor subsystem, the second wireless transceiver subsystem communicating bidirectionally with the first wire

  • Publication number: 20070017671
Abstract: Wellbore communication systems and methods for a wellsite having a downhole tool deployed from a rig into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation are disclosed. One example communication system includes a first mud pulse telemetry device positioned in a downhole tool and at least one additional non-mud pulse telemetry device positioned in the downhole tool. The example system also includes at least one of a pressure transducer or a pressure sensor adapted to detect a modulated pressure provided by at least one of the telemetry devices.
