  • Patent number: 8833085
Abstract: A system and method for startup control of a gas turbine is disclosed. The system and method includes defining a target startup time for the startup of the gas turbine and determining a remaining time to achieve the target startup time. The system and method includes monitoring at least one parameter associated with the startup and determining a first operating point for the parameter. The system and method adjusts the first operating point for the parameter to a second operating point based at least in part on the remaining time for the startup. The system and method controls an effector based on the second operating point for the parameter.

  • Publication number: 20140244055
Abstract: A control system for use in adapting the operation of a gas turbine is provided. The control system is configured to be coupled to at least one component of the gas turbine. The gas turbine is coupled to a power grid having a standardized frequency. The control system includes a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory includes processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the control system to store a status of the at least one component of the gas turbine and generate and store a first operating setting for the at least one component. The first operating setting corresponds to a first frequency of the power grid that is less than the standardized frequency.

  • Publication number: 20140158823
Abstract: A high altitude balloon system includes a dual chamber balloon extending from an upper apex to a lower apex with a circumferential edge between the upper and lower apexes. A deflectable diaphragm is within the dual chamber balloon and coupled along the circumferential edge. The deflectable membrane divides the dual chamber balloon into a lift gas chamber formed by an interior surface of the dual chamber balloon and the deflectable diaphragm, and a ballast chamber formed by the interior surface of the dual chamber balloon and the deflectable diaphragm. Optionally, the dual chamber balloon is constructed by interposing the deflectable diaphragm between an upper and lower balloon panels. Each of the upper and lower balloon panels and the deflectable diaphragm are then coupled together along the circumferential edge to form both the lift gas chamber and the ballast chamber.

  • Patent number: 8700752
Abstract: A method and system for optimizing a configuration of a set of LPARs and a set of servers that host the LPARs. Configuration data and optimization characteristics are received. By applying the configuration data and optimization characteristics, a best fit of the LPARs into the servers is determined, thereby determining an optimized configuration. The best fit is based on a variant of bin packing or multidimensional bin packing methodology. The optimized configuration is stored. In one embodiment, comparisons of shadow costs are utilized to determine an optimal placement of the LPARs in the servers. LPAR(s) in the set of LPARs are migrated to other server(s) in the set of servers, which results in the LPARs and servers being configured in the optimized configuration.
