Abstract: An improved radio transmitter encodes at least one data bit on each cycle of a carrier signal. The data is encoded on the carrier signal using phase modulation. Because at least one data bit is encoded on each cycle of the carrier signal, a carrier signal having a frequency (f) carries data at a rate of (f) bits per second. Thus, a 900 MHz carrier signal may carry a 900 Mbps data signal. In this embodiment, a radio receiver does not include a mixer, a local oscillator, and other traditional mixer components, but instead includes one or more digital signal processors that are able to decode the data modulated on the carrier signal at the carrier frequency. In one embodiment, each waveform of a received signal is analyzed and converted to a bit electronically without converting the received signal to one or more lower frequency signals.
