  • Patent number: 6922004
Abstract: A power unit assembly which has a pair of mirrored axial flux electric motors having a common axis of rotation, each axial flux motor including a rotor disposed on a rotor shaft and at least one stator disposed in operative relationship to said rotor. A common end plate is disposed between each of the pair of axial flux electric motors to provide a common mounting structure, while an output hub is operatively coupled to each rotor shaft of the pair of mirrored axial flux electric motors. Each of the pair of mirrored axial flux electric motors is operatively configured to provide independent speed and torque to each associated output hub.

  • Patent number: 6765327
Abstract: The present disclosure provides an assembly including an electric motor within an electric motor case and a driveline support. The electric motor includes at least one stator and a rotor. The rotor is connected to a rotor shaft. The vehicle support includes a hub rotatably attached to a housing by a package bearing. The electric motor case is attached to the housing and supports the stator. The rotor shaft is attached to the hub and supported solely by the package bearing of the driveline support. A shoulder portion of the rotor shaft abuts an end of the hub such that a desired air gap is maintained between the rotor and the stator.

  • Patent number: 5688201
Abstract: A traction drive of planetary configuration includes a cone, a pair of cups surrounding the cone, transfer rings located between the cone and the cups, and a cage that positions the transfer rings. The cone is unitary and has a pair of raceways which are presented outwardly and taper downwardly toward each other. The two cups have tapered raceways which are presented inwardly toward the cone raceway. The transfer rings on their peripheral surfaces are tapered and slightly crowned. The cage includes end disks which lie beyond the ends of the transfer rings and studs which connect the end disks and further serve as journals for the transfer rings, thus maintaining the rings at equal circumferential intervals. The two cups are held together, and springs, either at the rollers or along the cups, urge the tapered raceways of the cone and cups and the tapered peripheral surfaces of the transfer rings snugly together.

  • Patent number: 5595272
Abstract: A unidirectional clutch permits relative rotation in only one direction between a housing and a shaft that extends into the housing. The clutch includes bearings between the shaft and housing, a cylindrical friction surface on the shaft and a retainer in the housing, with the retainer surrounding the friction surface. The retainer, which is keyed to the housing and is relatively long, has pockets which open toward the friction surface. Each pocket is in part defined by a ramp which lies oblique to the friction surface, giving the pocket a large region and a small region. Each pocket contains a roller which is small enough to fit loosely in the large region and too large to fit into the small end. At each end of the retainer channels open laterally, and these channels contain pistons and springs, with the latter urging the former against the rollers in the pockets to urge the rollers toward the small regions of the pockets.

  • Patent number: 5503481
Abstract: A roller bearing has working surfaces, that is surfaces where its rollers and races contact each other, which have extremely shallow irregularities that are nondirectional and thus render the working surfaces isotropic. Moreover, the isotropic surfaces have very low average asperity slopes and likewise a very low plasticity indexes. To derive the high quality working surfaces, the races and rollers are first ground or otherwise mechanically machined to provide the working surfaces with the proper profiles. Then the races and rollers are immersed in a liquid chemical which reacts with the metal at the surfaces and contemporaneously forms a protective coating which inhibits further reaction. Abrading elements within the chemical come against the races and rollers as they are agitated and continuously remove the coating from higher elevations of the working surfaces, so that the chemical continues to react with the metal at those higher elevations.

  • Patent number: 5021035
Abstract: A traction drive unit for transmitting rotary motion about an axis of rotation has an inner sun roller, an outer ring and planet rollers arranged in two circular rows between the sun roller and outer ring. The sun roller takes the form of a double cone having outwardly presented raceways which taper downwardly toward each other and thrust ribs that project radially beyond the large ends of the raceways. The outer ring has two inwardly presented tapered raceways which taper downwardly toward the ends of the ring. The inner planet rollers are tapered rollers which are organized in two circular rows along the raceways of the sun member. The outer planet rollers have crowned peripheral surfaces which contact the tapered raceways of the outer ring and the tapered side surfaces of the inner planet rollers. They are captured axially by reason of the taper of the outer raceways and inner planet rollers. The outer rollers revolve in pairs about axles which are fitted to end disks.
