Patent number: 11231814Abstract: An electronic device may have light-emitting devices. A light-emitting device may include light-emitting diodes, a display, or other components that emit visual output. One or more image transport layers may be included in the electronic device. An image transport layer may have an input surface that receives an image and an output surface to which the image transport layer transports the image for viewing by a user. The image transport layers may have areas with compound curvature and other shapes. Deformed image transport layer structures such as deformed fibers in a coherent fiber bundle may be configured to hide gaps in displays and other structures. Displays may include light detectors that serve as a two-dimensional touch sensor. The touch sensor may detect touch input on an output surface of an image transport layer. Image transport layer material may be incorporated into buttons, elongated housings, wearable devices, and other equipment.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2020Date of Patent: January 25, 2022Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Michael B. Patent number: 10180755Abstract: The systems and techniques described herein generally relate to an electronic device having a touch-sensitive surface or region that is configured to receive force-based user input and dynamically adjust a force threshold used to recognize the force-based user input. In particular, the device may include one or more force sensors that are configured to detect a touch that exceeds a dynamically adjustable threshold. In some embodiments, the threshold is dynamically adjusted in response to a detected or estimated stability condition. By dynamically adjusting the threshold, the device may be better adapted or optimized for use with a particular support accessory or support configuration. In some cases, multiple sub-regions may be defined over the touch-sensitive surface, each sub-region having a different force threshold.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2016Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Matthew D. Hill, Rasamy Phouthavong, Scott A. Myers

Patent number: 10028397Abstract: An electronic device having several modifications designed to prevent liquid ingress into an opening (or openings) of the electronic device is disclosed. For example, the electronic device includes a SIM tray having a sealing element designed to provide a seal at an opening that receives the SIM tray. The sealing element may include a first section and a second section extending from the first section, with the first section designed to bend with respect to (and in some cases collapse onto) the second section. The electronic device may further include an audio module fitted with a sealing element. The sealing element may include extensions extending away from a main body of the sealing element, with some extension designed to engage the audio module, and other extensions designed to engage an audio module interface. The sealing element provides a seal against liquid ingress into the audio module.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2017Date of Patent: July 17, 2018Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Xiao Ying Zhao, Timothy S. Patent number: 9967375Abstract: An electronic device having liquid-resistant modifications that prevent liquid ingress into an opening (or openings) in an enclosure of the electronic device is disclosed. For example, the electronic device may include a coating formed from a liquid-resistant material that is applied internally to the enclosure. The electronic device may further include a frame that carries a protective transparent layer designed to cover a display assembly. In order to secure the frame with the enclosure, the electronic device may include an adhesive assembly disposed over an outer perimeter of the coating. The adhesive assembly may include several adhesive parts initially separate from one another. However, with the adhesive parts between the frame and the enclosure, the adhesive parts can be compressed by the frame and the enclosure, causing the adhesive parts to expand and engage each other. As a result, the coating and the adhesive parts provide a seal against liquid.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2017Date of Patent: May 8, 2018Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Xiao Ying Zhao, Timothy S. Patent number: 9954572Abstract: An electronic device having an enclosure with a sealing element to prevent ingress of contaminants at an interface between sealing element and a material is disclosed. The material may include an injection molded material that forms at least part of a radio frequency transparent window. The enclosure may include a first channel that receives the material. A second channel may open to the first channel and receive the sealing element. The sealing element may initially extend at least partially into the first channel. However, the material may provide compression forces to the sealing element to compress the sealing element out of the first channel, or at least compress the sealing element further into the second channel. The sealing element may provide a counterforce against the material to increase or enhance a seal against ingress attempting to pass through the enclosure at the interface between sealing element and the material.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2016Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Tyler B. Cater, Derek C. Krass, Rasamy Phouthavong

Patent number: 9513663Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a touch screen display. The touch screen display may have an array of display pixels that are used to display images for a user. Touch input to the touch screen display may be provided by a user's finger or other external object. A touch sensor in the display may have vertical and horizontal position sensors that are based on distinct touch sensor technologies. The position sensors may be based on strain gauge sensors or other force sensors, capacitive sensors having multiple elongated transparent capacitive electrodes that span the display, acoustic sensors, light-based sensors, and other types of sensors. An opaque masking layer in an inactive area of the display may hide some of the position sensor structures from view such as vertical position sensor structures. The horizontal position sensor structures may have minimal inactive regions along their edges.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2013Date of Patent: December 6, 2016Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Warren Z. Jones, Shayan Malek, Rasamy Phouthavong

Publication number: 20160276757Abstract: The subject matter of the disclosure relates to connectors for antenna feed assemblies and display coupling components of a mobile device. The flexible connectors can be configured with a flexible spring connector component that couples a mobile device antenna to a main logic board of the mobile device within a housing of the mobile device such that the flexible connector can withstand a drop event, while at the same providing for an in-line inductance as part of an antenna-defined design requirement. The display of the mobile device can be coupled to a housing of the mobile device using a pin-screw arrangement that allows the display to controllably shift in the X-direction and the Y-direction, while only being purposefully constrained in the Z-direction (with reference to a 3-dimensional graph having X, Y, and Z axes). This configuration can prevent the display from being pulled out of alignment during a drop event.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2016Publication date: September 22, 2016Inventors: James B.
