  • Publication number: 20090285159
Abstract: Techniques for selecting a serving sector for a terminal based on server selection information in order to balance the load of sectors in a wireless communication system are described. The server selection information for each sector may be set based on the load of the sector and may be used to rank the sector for selection as a serving sector. In one design, a terminal may receive server selection information for multiple sectors. The server selection information for each sector may include an offset used to adjust a measurement made by the terminal for the sector, a priority of the sector for selection as a serving sector, a DRCLock set based on the load of the sector, etc. The terminal may determine received signal qualities of the sectors. The terminal may then select one of the sectors as a serving sector based on the server selection information and the received signal qualities of the sectors.

  • Patent number: 7525909
Abstract: A method and an apparatus of dynamically setting a rise-over-thermal (ROT) threshold to control user-to-user interferences in a wireless communication system are disclosed. The ROT threshold is set by determining whether an outage of communication has occurred, increasing the ROT threshold by a predetermined increment if the outage has not occurred, and decreasing the ROT threshold by a predetermined decrement if the outage has occurred.

  • Publication number: 20090080363
Abstract: Aspects of mobility management within a wireless communications network including a plurality of sectors are disclosed. In an example, the wireless communications network includes a first cluster of sectors with at least one target sector and at least one supporting sector. The multicast communication session is carried within both the target and supporting sectors. In another example, a second cluster can be included within the network for supporting the same multicast communication session that includes its own target and supporting sectors. In this example, the first cluster transmits multicast media on a first interlace-multiplex (IM) pair of a downlink broadcast channel (BCH) and the second cluster transmits multicast media on a second IM pair of the downlink BCH. If sectors of the first and second clusters overlap, the network controls a manner in which the first and second clusters carry the multicast media.

  • Patent number: 7386305
Abstract: Broadly speaking, the invention comprises systems and methods that use the number of mobile stations, denoted by N, communicating with a base station, as a variable that determines the optimum induced change rate, R, and the antenna beam width, W, of a time-varying base station antenna gain pattern used in conjunction with a forward power modulation (FPM) or a similar scheme to maximize the overall data throughput from the base station by taking advantage of multi-user diversity. In one embodiment, the FPM scheme is turned off if N is below a lower threshold. If N is above this threshold, the FPM scheme is turned on with R and W set to appropriate values. Generally, higher values of N correspond to higher values of R and lower values of W.

  • Patent number: 7209517
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating maximum rate of data and for estimating a transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal then estimates the maximum rate of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal then estimates transmission power required for transmission of a data with a rate of data in accordance with the rate of data and the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be a pre-determined or dynamically adjusted. The terminal dynamically adjusts the quality metric margin in accordance with a result of comparison of a transmit power corresponding to the estimated maximum rate of data with an actual transmit power used to transmit the data.

  • Patent number: 7206598
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for a control channel power allocation in a communication system are disclosed. The method of control channel power allocation in an embodiment includes sorting a plurality of access terminals in an order of increasing required medium access control (MAC) channel power into a plurality of bins, sorting the access terminals with equal required MAC channel power in an order of decreasing forward link signal to interference and noise ratio (FL_SINR) if two or more access terminals have equal required MAC channel power, and determining total available ARQ power based upon total MAC channel power, total power allocated to reverse power control (RPC) channels, and total power allocated to reverse activity bit (RAB) channels.

  • Patent number: 7139274
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for a data transmission in a communication system are disclosed. Each of a subset of plural access terminals desiring to transmit user data in an interval transmits a request to transmit in the interval to an access network. The access network makes a decision to schedule at least one of the subset of the plural access terminals to transmit in the interval in accordance with the request. At least one access point of the access network transmits the decision to the plural access terminals.

  • Patent number: 7092717
Abstract: Method and a system method and system for a dynamic adjustment of a data request channel in a communication system are disclosed. A value of at least one variable affecting the data request channel margin is determined in accordance with conditions in the communication system. The at least one variable is then set to the determined value. The value of the at least one variable is then conveyed to a subscriber station in an adjustment message. The subscriber station determines whether the adjustment message was transmitted by a serving sector or a non-serving sector; and adjusts at least one attribute of the communication channel in accordance with the determination, thus adjusting the DRC channel margin.

  • Patent number: 7054632
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for an adaptive set management in a communication system are disclosed. Certain levels of an imbalance between a forward link and a reverse link are always present in a communication system. Although severe levels of an imbalance cause a detrimental effect on quality of communication and throughput, the imbalance is an issue only if it degrades throughput by one rate on the forward link. Consequently, an adaptive set management evaluates an imbalance among sectors in a subscriber station's list in accordance with the quality metric of the forward link and the reverse link, and removes from the subscriber station's list only a sector that causes severe imbalance. Although retaining a sector in the subscriber station's list may improve throughput, it may negatively affect other functions of the communication system, e.g., power control. Therefore, a method of power control is modified if a level of imbalance affecting the power control is detected.
