Patent number: 7177628Abstract: A system and method for downloading information from a content server to a mobile device in communication with a wireless communication network. The mobile device is assigned a network address and registers with the content server by providing the network address as an identification information. The content server establishes a communication channel to the mobile device by opening a socket to the network address and downloads the information to the mobile device through the communication channel. If the content server cannot open a communication channel to the network address, the content server sends a message to the mobile device.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2003Date of Patent: February 13, 2007Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Sommers, Michelle Antonelli, Leonard Hinds, Patrenahalli Narendra, Ernest Pineault, Raul Pombo, Sidney Taylor

Patent number: 6014376Abstract: A method for synchronizing base stations (104, 106, 108, 110) or radio ports in a communication system (100) such as a cordless or cellular telephone system uses a mobile station (114) or handset for synchronizing unsynchronized base stations. The mobile station (114) is first synchronized to a reference base station. The mobile station (114) then initiates communication with the unsynchronized base station and calculates a synchronization adjustment. The mobile station (114) transmits the synchronization adjustment to the unsynchronized base station which uses the synchronization adjustment to adjust its time base.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1996Date of Patent: January 11, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Victor M. Abreu, Raul A. Pombo, Paul D. Marko, David L. Brown

Patent number: 5892826Abstract: A data processor (20) which flexibly encrypts data within different address ranges includes an encryption determination circuit (50) to monitor an address conducted on an internal address bus (22) and when the address is within certain predefined ranges, perform encryption or decryption of address and/or data. For example the encryption determination circuit (50) may be used to selectively enable a data encryption-decryption circuit (60). When the data encryption-decryption circuit (60) is disabled, data conducted on an internal data bus (23) becomes "cleartext", i.e., non-encrypted. In one embodiment, the data encryption-decryption is performed in partial dependence on the address itself, and the address conducted to the external address bus is itself selectively encrypted as well.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1996Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: David L. Brown, Raul A. Pombo, Paul J. Polansky

Patent number: 5799256Abstract: A method and apparatus reduces power consumption in a portable communication device (104) by predicting a user's location, movement and actions. The portable communication device (104) is powered by a battery (120) and includes a battery control (122) for decoupling portions of the communication device (104) from the battery. Historical records of control channel and call activity are maintained in memory (117) at the communication device (104). This data is used to predict calls. This permits the communication device (104) to conserve power in the battery (120) when no call activity is likely. The stored data is also used to predict what control channels should be scanned to search for a nearby base station (102). This permits the communication device (104) to scan a reduced number of control channels and reduces the time duration necessary for powering up the receiver (108) of the communication device (104).Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1996Date of Patent: August 25, 1998Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Raul A. Pombo, Paul D. Marko

Patent number: 5754956Abstract: A radiotelephone handset (120) includes an antenna (122) and receiver (124) for receiving a control channel from a plurality of base stations (102, 104, 106). A time division multiple access controller circuit (126) coupled to the receiver stores all received control channel information in a captured data buffer (134). Under control of a processor (128), the handset identifies as candidate suitable base stations those base stations having acceptable received signal strength, acceptable identity or system capability. From the candidates, the handset (120) chooses a suitable base station having acceptable signal quality, access rights and system capability and synchronizes communication with the suitable base station.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1995Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Victor M. Abreu, Raul A. Pombo, Paul D. Marko, David L.. Brown

Patent number: 5557743Abstract: Electronic devices using microprocessors requiring additional external memory can have security protection for the microprocessors while in an expanded mode of operation. A microprocessor having a security access circuit allows executable code to be stored in a peripheral storage device, such as external EPROM, while maintaining protection to the microprocessor EEPROM by monitoring if an instruction code is generated from an internal memory source or an external memory source.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1994Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Raul Pombo, Jaime Borras, Michel Bron

Patent number: 5396648Abstract: A method and apparatus whereby a communication unit (10) transmits a communication channel request and the nearest base site (12) makes the communication channel grant or allocation. A base site receives the channel request signal, measures the received signal strength (RSSI) level of the received signal, and if that level is above a threshold level, a communication channel is allocated to the requesting communication unit, thus establishing a communication link. If the channel request signal does not have an RSSI level above the threshold, the base site delays the grant of a communication channel for a period inversely proportional to the measured RSSI level to allow other base sites the opportunity to grant a communication channel to the requesting communication unit. If the base site determines that another base site has granted a communication channel to the requesting communication unit, the allocation process is stopped, and the base site continues scanning for channel request signals.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1993Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Stelios J. Patsiokas, Thomas V. D'Amico, Charles D. Suter, Raul A. Pombo

Patent number: 5267230Abstract: A communication system base site (300) receives a signal (400) representing voice information (402) and data information (404 or 404') from a communication channel. At least the data information is processed to verify the integrity of the communication channel, and the voice information (402) is transmitted when the integrity of the communication channel is verified.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1991Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Prathivadhi B.
