    Abstract: A system for a variable capacity centrifugal compressor is provided. The compressor includes a base plate, a housing, and a variable geometry diffuser. A selectively moveable wall is disposed adjacent the base plate to vary the geometry of the diffuser. A portion of the moveable wall cooperates with a portion of the base plate to restrict the flow of fluid between the moveable wall and the base plate throughout the range of motion of the moveable wall to reduce the force required to open the diffuser.
