  • Patent number: 7507361
Abstract: Polyisocyanate-based reaction systems, a pultrusion process of those systems to produce reinforced matrix composites, and to composites produced thereby. The polyisocyanate-based systems are mixing activated reaction systems that include a polyol composition, an optional chain extender or crosslinker, and a polyisocyanate. The polyisocyanate-based systems exhibit improved processing characteristics in the manufacture of fiber reinforced thermoset composites via reactive pultrusion.

  • Publication number: 20030176561
Abstract: Process for the preparation of fiber reinforced composites in which the matrix polymer is derived from the catalyzed reaction of a liquid polyisocyanate containing material. The principle curing mechanism is the formation of urethane and/or isocyanurate linkages. At least a portion of the catalyst is applied onto the surface of the reinforcing fibers and/or onto the surface to the uncured resin impregnated reinforcing structure, under conditions such that the catalyst is not dispersed into the bulk of the isocyanate containing resin until cure. Curing is facilitated by a combination of mechanical and thermal action. The process is particularly well suited for the preparation of composites by pultrusion, using a one-component open-bath pultrusion machine. The process of the invention may be adapted to a much wider range of composite fabrication methods, including SMC and filament winding.

  • Patent number: 6486224
Abstract: The disclosed invention relates to a polyurethane elastomer that has improved hydrolysis resistance. The polyurethane elastomer is made by reacting a polyol blend of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid based polyester polyol, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid based polyester polyol, and a blowing agent. The polyol blend is reacted with an isocyanate terminated prepolymer. The aromatic dicarboxylic acid based polyester polyol is the reaction product of an aliphatic alcohol and ortho-phthalic acid. The aliphatic dicarboxylic acid based polyester polyol is the reaction product of adipic acid and glycols.
