The operation includes detecting a cookware item on the cooktop, the cookware item being associated with a first heating element of the plurality of heating elements; determining that the first heating element is active; determining that the cookware item has been removed from the first heating element after determining that the first heating element is active; and adjusting the display in response to determining that the cookware item has been removed from the first heating element, wherein adjusting the display includes activating the plurality of indicators of the display according to a predetermined pattern.
