    Abstract: A powertrain comprises a planetary gearing arrangement that includes two sun gear members, two ring gear members, a single carrier member, and an interconnecting member that connects either the two sun gear members or the two ring gear members. The powertrain includes an input member and an output member, one of which is connectable to the carrier member and the other of which is connectable to the first ring gear member. A first electric machine and a second electric machine are included in the powertrain. The second electric machine is operatively connected to the first sun gear member to drive the first sun gear member, and the first electric machine is operatively connected to drive that one of the second ring gear member and the second sun gear member which is not connected to the interconnecting member. A brake is selectively engageable to hold the input member stationary.

Only a single planetary gear set having a first member, a second member, and a third member is operatively connected between the input member and the output member. The powertrain includes a first, a second, a third, and a fourth selectively engageable torque-transmitting mechanism. Selective engagement of a different one or ones of the torque-transmitting mechanisms and selective operation of one or both electric machines establishes a series operating mode, an input-split operating mode, at least one electric-only operating mode, and at least one fixed gear operating mode between the input member and the output member.

A first and a second motor/generator are provided, as well as five torque-transmitting mechanisms, including only one brake. The torque-transmitting mechanisms are engagable in different combinations to establish at least two electric-only operating mode, at least two engine-only operating mode, and at least three electrically-variable operating modes. In one embodiment, an electric torque converter operating mode is provided, and may be the default mode in case of motor/generator failure.

    Abstract: A powertrain includes an input member, an output member, and a stationary member. A first and a second electric motor/generator are provided. Only two planetary gear sets are used, each having a respective first, second, and third member. An interconnecting member connects one of the members of a first one of the planetary gear sets to one of the members of a second one of the planetary gear sets. The input member, the output member, the first motor/generator and the second motor/generator are each continuously connected for common rotation with a different one of the members of the planetary gear sets that is not connected by the interconnecting member. Four brakes are each selectively engageable to ground a different respective one of the members of the planetary gear sets that is not connected by the interconnecting member to the stationary member.

The first member is connected for common rotation with an input member. A first clutch is selectively engageable to operatively connect the crankshaft with the input member. A second clutch is selectively engageable to ground the input member with a stationary member. An electric motor/generator has a rotor operatively connected for common rotation with the second member. An output member is provided, with a set of intermeshing gears configured to transfer torque from the third member to the output member. A first gear pair and a second gear pair are operable by engagement of a first synchronizer and a second synchronizer, respectively, to provide two different fixed ratios between the input member and the output member.
