  • Patent number: 5716185
Abstract: A multiplicity of teeth are mounted to a beam in a comb structure, with the space between the teeth defining slots. The edges of the slots are lined with upstanding flanges which are sharpened to form cutting edges. The comb structure is arranged to be substantially parallel to an array of bag breaking bars. The bars interdigitate with the teeth and thus pass through the narrow openings between the teeth where the knife edges scrape the bars, thereby cutting free any material adhering to or impaled upon the bag breaking bars. Alternatively, an apparatus for cleaning a bag breaker has a pivotally mounted are having a fork which is aligned to receive a bar between the tines of the fork. The fork engages the base of the bar and then proceeds to slide up the bar as the forward motion of the bar causes the arm to pivot. In this way, material impaled upon a bar is slid or scraped upwardly towards the top of the bar.

  • Patent number: 5568896
Abstract: Methods for processing wood chips for digestion utilize a chip destructuring apparatus. The method includes an initial disc screen for removing the gross overthick and oversized chips which are discarded or are processed through a rechipper. After the initial disc screen, the entire stream of chips is processed to eliminate tramp metal. The entire chip stream is screened to remove fines. The stream of chips is fed to the chip destructuring apparatus from a surge bin with a star feeder. The star feeder is a metering device and is operated by a controller which monitors the level of chips in the surge bin. The controller uses the star feeder to feed a steady supply of chips to the chip destructuring apparatus which allows the destructuring apparatus to be configured for a maximum feed rate.

  • Patent number: 5483753
Abstract: A drum dryer seal is built up of six layers of high temperature ceramic cloth that form a blanket. The top layer is aluminized, high temperature barrier yarn, to prevent air from passing through the seal. The blanket is clamped to a bracket on the non-rotating portion of the dryer by a clamp consisting of a clamping strip and a plurality of clamping bolts. The clamping bolts may also hold a plurality of C-shaped spring retention brackets, the upper leg of each holds a resilient spring. The springs overlie the sealing ring. A plunger is mounted on the spring which is positioned over a sealing ring. The plungers bias the blanket against the sealing ring. An alternative embodiment employs spring rods incorporated in the blanket which extend between the bracket and the sealing ring.

  • Patent number: 5263651
Abstract: An apparatus for processing wood chips for use in the preparation of pulp in a papermaking operation including a conduit for accommodating a flow stream of wood chips, a rotary valve in the conduit, shunt branch conduits with a first shunt leading to a chip dumping bin and a second shunt leading to a chip processing device; dampers in the branches with the damper for the first shunt branch being in normally closed position and a damper in the other shunt branch being in a normally open position; and a metal detection device upstream of the branches operative to move the first damper to open position and the second damper to closed position for a predetermined time and to stop the rotary valve and to reactivate the dampers and rotary valve after a predetermined time.
