  • Patent number: 10328251
Abstract: A system to detect occlusion of an intravenous catheter may include a housing, which may include a distal end configured to couple to a proximal end of a catheter adapter and an inner lumen forming a fluid pathway. The system may also include one or more transmitters, which may be disposed within the housing. The transmitters may be configured to transmit first energy waves along a length of an intravenous catheter at a first frequency, and a portion of the first energy waves that are reflected back from the catheter may be detected by the system. Based on the portion of the first energy waves that are reflected back from the catheter, the transmitters may transmit second energy waves along the length of the catheter at a second frequency, which may be greater than the first frequency and configured to reduce formation of blood clots within the catheter.

  • Publication number: 20190167896
Abstract: A sealed fluid transfer device comprised of tubing, a proximal fitting, and a distal needle assembly is provided. The needle assembly includes a needle hub secured to a needle cannula. A cantilevered actuator arm extends outwardly from the needle hub having an actuator button at its free end. The needle assembly is disposed in a barrel and can move from a distal position, where the needle is exposed, to a proximal position, where the needle is shielded. The barrel includes a septum which seals the barrel. A spring is disposed in the barrel for propelling the needle assembly to the proximal position. The barrel includes an aperture that receives the actuator button for locking the spring in a compressed condition. Depression of the actuator button enables the spring to propel the needle assembly into its proximal position. A safety mechanism prevents inadvertent depression of the actuator button.

  • Publication number: 20190120727
Abstract: Contamination detection systems, kits, and techniques are described for testing surfaces for the presence of hazardous contaminants, while minimizing user exposure to these contaminants. Even trace amounts of contaminants can be detected. A collection kit provides a swab that is simple to use, easy to hold and grip, allows the user to swab large areas of a surface, and keeps the user's hands away from the surface being tested. The kit also provides open and closed fluid transfer mechanism to transfer the collected fluid to a detection device while minimizing user exposure to hazardous contaminants in the collected fluid. Contamination detection kits can rapidly collect and detect hazardous drugs, including trace amounts of antineoplastic agents, in healthcare settings at the site of contamination.

Abstract: A needle is provided that can be used for introducing or aspirating fluids to a patient or as an introducer needle for positioning and inserting a catheter, such as a peripheral IV catheter into a patient. The needle can be an introducer needle that extends from the distal end of the catheter during insertion. The needle has an insertion tip with a configuration to assist penetration into a vein with a reduced incidence of injuring the inner surface of the vein or inadvertently passing through side wall of the vein. The needle tip can be farmed with a curved distal end surface where the pointed tip is spaced radially inward relative to the outer surface of the needle. In another embodiment the needle tip can have a reverse beveled surface having an axial length, angle, and curvature to assist in penetrating the vein with a reduced incidence of transfixing the vein.
