  • Patent number: 7025056
Abstract: An inhaler for producing an inhalable aerosol of a powdered medicament includes an aerosolizing device in the form of a vortex chamber (1). The vortex chamber (1) has a curved wall (12), a tangential inlet port (3) and an axial exit port (2). The radius R of the vortex chamber (1) decreases with angular extend ?. The reduction in effective cross-sectional area of the vortex chamber accelerates the gas flow between the inlet (3) and the outlet (2) to reduce deposition of the medicament.

  • Patent number: 6967002
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a sterile medical solution is disclosed. The method includes providing at least two components, a first component including bicarbonate ions and a second component including glucose or calcium ions, preheating the first component to a first temperature and the second component to a second temperature, heat sterilizing the first and second components separately to a third and fourth temperatures respectively, the third and fourth temperatures being sterilizing temperatures for the first and second components, maintaining the first and second components approximately at their respective third and fourth temperatures, so as to sterilize the first and second components, cooling the first and second components and delivering the first and second components to a mixing device.

  • Patent number: 6818179
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for sterilizing heat sensitive fluids are provided. The methods include providing a first heat sensitive fluid component, providing a second fluid component, heating the second fluid component to a temperature greater than a predetermined sterilizing temperature, mixing the first heat sensitive fluid component with the heated second fluid component to heat the first heat sensitive fluid components and provide a mixed fluid at a temperature at least up to the predetermined sterilizing temperature, and maintaining the mixed fluid at that temperature for a predetermined sterilizing period. Apparatus for carrying out this method is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20040215129
Abstract: A method and apparatus for peritoneal dialysis are described The method includes draining a spent fluid from a patient into a second bag in a pressure chamber including a first bag for containing a fresh fluid for supply to a patient and a second bag for containing a spent fluid drained from a patient, by applying a reduced pressure to the second bag while weighing the first and second bags so as to control the draining of the spent fluid and supplying the fresh fluid to the first bag at a predetermined replenishment flow rate during draining of the spent fluid from the patient into the second bag independently of the influence of the reduced pressure. Apparatus for conducting such a method is also included.

  • Patent number: 5683732
Abstract: A sealed, openable liquid container, e.g., for a beverage such as beer, comprises a container (10) partly filled with liquid (24) to provide a primary headspace (26). Secured to the base of the container (10) by means of adhesive (16) is an insert (14) in the form of a hollow body (18) having an upper restricted orifice (20) and a lower restricted orifice (22) therein. The hollow body (18) is partly filled with liquid derived from the main body of the container (10) so that a secondary headspace (23) is provided. The upper restricted orifice (22) communicates with the headspace (23), whilst the restricted orifice (22) is submerged in the liquid. The upper restricted orifice (22) is of a size such that the bubble point effect prevents loss of gas from the headspace (23) into the liquid (24) until a large pressure differential occurs across the orifice (20) when the container (10) is opened by means of tab (30).
