  • Patent number: 10253241
Abstract: A method of cleaning a wellbore prior to the production of oil or gas is disclosed, wherein the wellbore has been drilled with an invert emulsion drilling mud that forms an invert emulsion filter cake. The method may include the steps of circulating a breaker fluid into the wellbore, where the breaker fluid includes an aqueous fluid, a water soluble polar organic solvent, a hydrolysable ester of a carboxylic acid, and a weighting age, and where the hydrolysable ester is selected so that upon hydrolysis an organic acid is released and the invert emulsion of the filter cake breaks.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: April 9, 2019
    Assignee: M-I L.L.C.
Inventors: Charles Svoboda, Raymond David Ravitz, Mark R. Luyster
  • Publication number: 20160152884
Abstract: A method may include circulating a breaker fluid into a wellbore, where the breaker fluid includes a base fluid of divalent brine having an amount of free water therein; a primary breaker; and a secondary breaker present in an amount less than the primary breaker, where the primary breaker is either a hydrolysable ester of a carboxylic acid or an iminodiacetic acid, and the secondary breaker is the other of the hydrolysable ester of a carboxylic acid or an iminodiacetic acid.

  • Patent number: 9085725
Abstract: A method of cleaning a wellbore prior to the production of oil or gas, wherein the wellbore has been drilled with an invert emulsion drilling mud that forms an invert emulsion filter cake is disclosed. The method may include circulating a breaker fluid into the wellbore, where the breaker fluid includes a non-oleaginous internal phase and an oleaginous external phase, where the non-oleaginous phase includes a water soluble polar organic solvent, a hydrolysable ester of a carboxylic acid, and a weighting agent, and the oleaginous external phase includes an oleaginous fluid and an emulsifier, and where the hydrolysable ester is selected so that upon hydrolysis an organic acid is released and the invert emulsion of the filter cake breaks.
