Publication number: 20130274717Abstract: A surgical drain device includes a matrix of biodegradable polymer material and a plurality of drain tubes attached to the matrix. The device is implanted within a surgical wound to treat the presence of seromas, for example, and is used to promote drainage, tissue adhesion, and wound closure. The drain tubes converge into a common collection tube that leads wound fluid outside the body under gravity feed or negative pressure applied to the collection tube. The matrix contains an array of apertures that allow tissue contact across the device. A preferred embodiment comprises a tissue anchoring system including anchor elements such as hooks or barbs. The device can be used with a negative pressure system to further improve the drainage band can also be used with a wound dressing. The device and systems containing the device are particularly useful to promote the healing of surgical wounds from abdominal surgery.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2012Publication date: October 17, 2013Inventor: Raymond Dunn

Patent number: 8409231Abstract: The present invention relates to a contoured scalpel handle. The contoured shape of the handle provides for increased contact area with the user's hand using a larger diameter central portion and a smaller diameter trough. The generally circular cross-section allows rotation of the angle of the blade relative to the tissue without the need to change the grip on the handle. The contoured handle can be used as an adapter sleeve in which a scalpel handle can be inserted or can include a blade mounting element on which a blade is directly mounted.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2010Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: University of MassachusettsInventor: Raymond Dunn

Publication number: 20120323283Abstract: An assembly for rigid bone fixation includes a plate and a screw. The screw can be rotated freely within the plate in a non-locking configuration to secure the plate against the bone. A locking mechanism is engaged to prevent the screw from moving relative the plate. In one embodiment, the plate includes a threaded portion and a non-threaded portion. The screw head rotates within the non-threaded portion to tighten the screw and pull the plate against the bone. The locking mechanism can include a moveable nut that rotates within the threaded portion of the plate to lock the screw and plate in a locking mode. The assembly can be used for rigid fixation of bones that experience cyclic loads, such as the sternum and mandible. Methods of rigid bone fixation are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2012Publication date: December 20, 2012Inventors: Raymond Dunn, Janice Lalikos, Kristen Billiar, Alexander Christakis, John Dieselman

Patent number: 7697462Abstract: A system and method for designing a full duplex communications transceiver to enable a reduction in isolation between a transmit signal and a receive signal at a diplexer is disclosed. An RFE transmit filter attenuation level can be determined to be sufficient to attenuate a noise power of the transmitter below a thermal noise floor of the power amplifier. A minimum diplexer transmit filter attenuation level can be calculated to attenuate noise power output from the power amplifier in the receive band to a level below a noise floor of the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2007Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: L-3 Communications, Corp.Inventors: Gary Raymond Dunn, Jr., Richard Alan McNamee
