  • Patent number: 4477302
Abstract: A method of making an energy-absorbing shock cell for mounting bumper devices on legs of offshore oil rig structures having inner and outer metal tubes connected by an intervening vulcanized rubber sleeve maintained under compression adhesively bonded to the inner and outer metal tubes. The shock cell is made by a series of operations in which portions of the metal tubes are coated with adhesive material, and the rubber sleeve is bonded to the adhesive coated areas by vulcanization and post-vulcanized heating.

Date of Patent: October 16, 1984
    Assignee: Teledyne Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Raymond F. Leblanc, William T. Cummins
  • Patent number: 4411556
Abstract: A bumper construction for offshore oil rig structures in which an upright metal bumper pipe member of considerable length is encased or sheathed loosely with a tubular rubber enclosure rotatable on the pipe member. The tubular enclosure is formed by a series of rubber sleeves telescoped over and stacked on the upright pipe. Each sleeve has three integrally vulcanized layers of elastomeric materials which have physical properties different one from those of each other layer. The different elastomeric materials are present in predetermined percentages by weight. Each sleeve has a length substantially greater than its inner diameter and preferably more than two times its inner diameter. The sleeves have interfitting conical formations at adjacent ends when stacked.

  • Patent number: 4378749
Abstract: A rotatable energy-absorbing sleeve unit for ship bumpers including a rim-free vehicle rubber-containing tire carcass filled with elastomeric foam. The elastomeric foam may be either polyurethane or rubber foam. The tire may be an auto or truck new, used, retreaded or blemished tire.

  • Patent number: 4363474
Abstract: An energy-absorbing shock cell for mounting bumper or barrier devices on legs or other members of offshore oil rig structures having inner and outer metal tubes connected by an intervening rubber sleevelike body is provided with snubbing means engageable between limit members rigidly mounted in spaced relation on the inner and outer tubes to prevent telescopic outward movement of said inner tube from the outer tube beyond a certain predetermined location, thereby preventing the inner tube from being pulled completely out of the outer tube by external forces which would destroy the shock cell.

  • Patent number: 4257994
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for injection molding solid steel-banded industrial rubber tires wherein a steel band is inserted in the bottom mold member cavity when the top mold member is in open position. Bite ring and knockout member components are contained in mold member cavity recesses. Closing movement of the mold members to mated position seals the bite ring and knockout member components against the steel bank and mold member recess surfaces to prevent leakage of injected rubber compound from the cavity during injection and curing. The mold has an internal wedge member which expands a split ring against the steel band when the mold is closed to prevent band distortion from pressure existing when the mold is injected and the rubber is cured therein to form the tire tread portion which is bonded to the steel band during curing. Mold components knock the cured tire out of the top mold member upon opening the mold.
