Patent number: 5593449Abstract: A knee prosthesis for surgical implantation to a patient's leg bone at the knee joint area includes a prothesis body portion that extends transversely relative to the patient's intramedullary canal for carrying a bearing surface that articulates with the patient's adjacent leg bone or with another prosthesis component. A conical connector extends from the prosthesis portion and along an axis that generally tracks the patient's intramedullary canal. A stem member includes first and second end portions and has a central longitudinal stem axis. The stem member includes a socket at each end portion for forming connections to the conical connector at the respective end portions as selected by the surgeon. One of the sockets has a central longitudinal axis that generally coincides with the central longitudinal axis of the stem. The other socket has a central longitudinal axis that forms an acute angle with the axis of the stem.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1994Date of Patent: January 14, 1997Assignee: Smith & Nephew Richards Inc.Inventor: Raymond H. Roberson, Jr.

Patent number: 5354075Abstract: A keyless drill chuck apparatus includes a tubular body having a longitudinal bore that includes first and second bore sections. The first bore section is of a smaller diameter and is closer to the proximal end portion of the drill, that end portion that is connected to a tool driver, motor or the like. The second bore section is larger diameter portion that is opened ended. A pair of bearing supports are positioned at the two bore sections. Each of the bearing holders carriers a plurality of conically-shaped bearing members. During use, a drill bit can be placed in either of the bore sections and into engagement with one of the selected sets of bearing. During use, different diameter drill bits and thus be placed as desired in the smaller or larger bore section and into engagement with the first or second set of bearing. Scalloped portions of the tool body adjacent each of the bores are provided in a corresponding number to the number of bearings.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1993Date of Patent: October 11, 1994Assignee: Smith & Nephew Richards Inc.Inventors: Gregory C.
