  • Patent number: 6668552
Abstract: A hydraulic brake booster has a housing with a stepped bore for retaining a cylindrical piston and a control bore for retaining a control valve. The cylindrical piston defines, with the stepped bore, an output chamber, a relief chamber and a power chamber; and includes a second stepped bore for a reaction piston. The reaction piston includes an axial bore, receiving a plunger defining an actuation chamber and a poppet valve. The input force initially moves the plunger and poppet valve to interrupt communication between the actuation and relief chambers; and thereafter moves the plunger to pressurize fluid in the actuation chamber, creating an input signal. The input signal activates the control valve; generating a regulated pressurized fluid, supplied directly to a second set of wheel brakes and acts on the cylindrical piston, to pressurize operational fluid supplied to a first set of wheel brakes.

  • Patent number: 6606859
Abstract: A master cylinder (12,212) including a housing (40,40a) with a bore (42,42a) for retaining a piston assembly (100,200) to define a first chamber (54) that is connected to wheel brakes (14,14′) in a first brake circuit and a second chamber (56) that is connected to wheel brakes (18,18′) in a second brake circuit. The piston assembly (100,200) includes a sleeve (102,202) and a concentric cylindrical body (110,210) whose respective first and second end surface areas define a first effective area (D1) while the second end surface area of the cylindrical body (110,210) defines a second effective area (D2) within the bore (42,42a).

  • Patent number: 6050089
Abstract: A remotely located brake booster for supplying an input force to a pressurizing device to develop pressurized fluid to effect a brake application. The brake booster responds to an actuation signal in the form of pressurized fluid being communicated from a control apparatus activated by an operator. The brake booster has a housing with a bore and a piston located therein to define an operational chamber. The housing has an inlet port through which pressurized fluid from the control apparatus is receiving by the operational chamber. The piston moves from a rest position to an actuation position in response to pressurized fluid being received in the operational chamber to produce the input force for operating the pressurizing device.

  • Patent number: 5456525
Abstract: A master cylinder for use in a brake system having an anti-spin apparatus to provide traction control for the drive wheels of a vehicle. The brake system has a pump responsive to an input from the anti-spin apparatus for directly drawing fluid from a reservoir into the brake system through a separate valve located in a pump compensation port connected to a pressurizing chamber of the master cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5207061
Abstract: The master cylinder (10) with externally adjusted secondary compensation comprises a tandem master cylinder (10) having primary and secondary piston assemblies (20, 30) disposed within a stepped bore (12). The portion of the bore containing the secondary piston assembly (30) has an enlarged diameter bore section (14) such that an end member (50) may be threadedly received within a bore opening (13) of the master cylinder (10). The end member (50) includes a longitudinal portion (55) having therein at least one outlet opening (60) and one compensation opening (58), each opening (58, 60) communicating with an interior opening (56) receiving slidably the secondary piston assembly (30) and a resilient spring (34) seated at one end of the interior opening (56) and biasing the secondary piston assembly (30).

  • Patent number: 4679397
Abstract: The hydraulic power braking apparatus comprises a fluid power apparatus (10) receiving fluid pressure from a power steering apparatus of the vehicle, the fluid power apparatus (10) connected at one end to the brake pedal of the vehicle and at the other end to a master cylinder (110). The master cylinder (110) is connected to a fluid displacement multiplier (210), fluid pressure developed by the master cylinder being communicated to the fluid displacement multiplier (210). The fluid displacement multiplier (210) comprises a housing (212) having therein a stepped chamber (211) with a differential area piston (213), the differential area piston (213) having a through passage (240) controlled by a poppet valve (250).

  • Patent number: 3969898
Abstract: A cover for a retention chamber in a master cylinder reservoir which will permit a probe to pass through a tab and pressurize a piston in a pressurizing chamber with a test fluid under pressure. This test fluid will allow an operator to visually inspect the master cylinder for fluid failures at various pressures. In the normal operation, the tab of the cover will allow fluid to flow from a supply chamber into the retention chamber. However, during a brake application when fluid is transmitted through the compensator port as the pressurizing piston moves past the compensator port, the tab will prevent this fluid from being squirted into the supply reservoir. This will assure that a minimum quantity of fluid is always present in the retention chamber to operate the brake system even though a low fluid level indicator in the supply chamber presents a failure warning signal to the operator.
