  • Patent number: 5628937
Abstract: A process for producing solid particles by drying a spray of liquid droplets. The droplets are formed by projecting a liquid formulation as a plurality of jets J (FIG. 6) in such a way that each jet breaks up into droplets of narrow size distribution. Prior to the onset of coalescence the droplets are contacted with a gas flow (G) which is arranged to reduce coalescence by disrupting slip streaming of the droplets and/or accelerating the droplets.

  • Patent number: 5449424
Abstract: Precipitation of fine azide core particles with in-situ coating with suspended tiny oxide particles, followed by concentration of the dilute suspension of these bodies to form a slurry with residual dissolved azide in the liquor, and finally converting the slurry in to solid aggregates of the pyrotechnic bodies by e.g. prilling whereby liquid phase evaporation releases dissolved azide causing the pyrotechnic bodies to be adhered together in to larger aggregates.

  • Patent number: 4986858
Abstract: A method for producing an emulsion explosive comprises introducing a liquid organic fuel phase and an immiscible liquid oxidizer phase into apparatus having a mixer chamber, flow constrictor means for introducing the liquid oxidizer phase as an emergent turbulent jet into the chamber to cause its fragmentation into droplets in situ within the chamber, means for introducing the fuel phase into the chamber so that the fuel phase introduced thereby contacts and becomes distributed around the droplets of oxidizer phase as they form to produce emulsion and further providing shear mixing means within the mixing chamber to effect enhancement of the mixing of the chamber contents and thereby to continuously incorporate the fuel phase to produce a more refined emulsion suitable for use as the basis for an explosive system, particularly emulsions of high velocity.

  • Patent number: 4911770
Abstract: Apparatus for producing a multi-phase emulsion explosive from a liquid organic fuel medium and an immiscible liquid oxidizer comprises a mixing chamber, flow constrictor means for introducing the liquid oxidizer as an emergent turbulent jet to said chamber and causing formation of droplets of said oxidizer in situ within the chamber, means for introducing the fuel medium to said chamber so that the fuel introduced thereby contacts and stabilizes the droplets of oxidizer solution as they are formed to maintain same as discrete droplets of oxidizer liquid and thereby provide an emulsion suitable for use as the basis for an explosive system.

  • Patent number: 4260734
Abstract: A process (and apparatus therefor) for carrying out thermally-initiated chemical reactions or physical changes by heating a particulate substrate in a fluidized bed having hotter zone(s) and cooler zone(s) between which the fluidized particles circulate, the dwell time in the hotter zone(s) being sufficiently short so as to prevent the particles undergoing an undesirable thermal transformation before the particles move into the cooler zone(s). The fluidized bed is applicable, for example, to a process for the polymerization of a low molecular weight poly(ethylene terephthalate).

  • Patent number: 4050280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the reduction rolling of metal rod out of billets, ingots, continuously cast bar and like starting elements, in and by which the stock to be reduced is sent through a sequential series of roll-stands each having a pair of reduction rolls and an entry guide to direct the stock into the nip of the rolls. Some, most or all of the rolls are cylindrical, parallel and devoid of grooves; the stock is shaped by rolling so that upon arrival at and upon departure from each pair of grooveless rolls it has a cross-sectional profile having a major axis which is from one and one half to two and one half times longer than a minor axis at right angles to the major axis. The stock so shaped is presented to the grooveless rolls so that its minor axis is substantially parallel to the work surfaces of the rolls.
