    Abstract: A process for protecting metal from the deleterious effects of interaction with atmospheres surrounding said metal which comprises forming on the surface of said metal a continuous film of green chromium oxide and silica, the green chromium oxide portion of said film being directly bonded to the underlying base metal and coacting with the silica to provide a film impervious to gas at temperatures of about 500.degree.C. to about 1300.degree.C. The invention contemplates the product so protected and a composition of matter comprising chromium metal powder dispersed in an alkali-stabilized silica sol particularly adapted to be used in forming the green chromium oxide-silica film on metals.
