Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivering video program content with selective viewing capability. An apparatus in accordance with the present invention comprises a personal video recorder (PVR), which can be a portion of an Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD), an access key, coupled to the PVR, and a storage medium containing the video program content, wherein the video program content is stored on the storage medium in an encrypted manner, the access key is used to access the program content on the storage medium, and the storage medium is removable from the PVR.

Abstract: A method and system for accessing content includes a user device and a subscription manager that generates a first identifier associated with a first content in a first format and a second identifier associated with the first content in a second format. The system also includes a conditional access system that communicates a first identifier, the second identifier and rules to the user device. The user device accesses the first content with the first format in response purchasing the first content in the first format. The user device selects the first content in the second format and accesses the first content in the second format in response to purchasing the first content in the first format and the rules.

Abstract: A user device includes a viewer tracking module that tracks viewer events to form a viewer tracking log and a recommendation module that generates a timeslot viewing profile based on the viewer tracking log. The timeslot viewing profile includes television programs watched previously and a prioritized timeslot series profile determined by summing and prioritizing the count of a plurality of watched programs in a series. The recommendation module compares the timeslot viewing profile of available television programs during the timeslot, generates a first content recommendation list of available television programs, receives related content identifiers for related content that identify content that is available and is related to the television programs of the first content recommendation, and, based on the related content identifiers, generates a second content recommendation list including content that is available during the timeslot different from the first content recommendation list.

Abstract: A user device and method for operating the same includes a memory and a controller that stores an external recommendation list in the memory, said external recommendations list comprising a marketing list comprising a plurality of marketing list entries and a related program list comprising a plurality of related program entries that are related to the plurality of marketing list entries. Each marketing list entry has a related score corresponding to a respective marketing list entry. The controller generates a most viewed programming list, comparing the external recommendations list and most viewed programming list using the related score and generates a recommended recording list using both the external recommendation list and the most viewed programming list. The controller also stores at least one content from the recording recommendation list in the memory.

Abstract: A system and method for communicating content to a user device includes a head end that communicates a plurality of upcoming content metadata that includes a content title to the user device. The user device displays the upcoming content metadata and selects at least one upcoming content metadata from the plurality of upcoming content metadata to form selected data. The user device communicates the selected data to the head end. The head end adjusts head end communication parameters for the content associated with the selected data based on the selected data and communicates the content to a user device based on the head end communication parameters.

Abstract: Secure content transfer systems and methods to operate the same are disclosed. An example system includes a content server to encrypt content according to an encryption key, and to transfer the encrypted content, the encryption key and a license to a client that supports a digital rights management technology. The example system further includes a broadcast system headend to determine the encryption key, wherein the broadcast system headend is physically separate from the content server, and a digital rights management license server to provide the license.

Abstract: A system and method for generating television recommendations includes a viewer tracking module that tracks viewer events to form a viewer tracking log. A recommendation module that determines a timeslot, generates a timeslot viewing profile based on the timeslot. The viewer tracking log corresponds to television programs watched previously at the user device during the timeslot. The recommendation module compares the timeslot viewing profile with available content for the timeslot and generates a content recommendation list.

Abstract: A communication system 10 includes a head end 12 that generates a device list with channel or content authorizations. The head end communicates the list to a system gateway 26. The gateway 26 receives the list. A plurality of user devices 28 is coupled to the gateway 26. A first device of the plurality of user devices generates a channel or content request at the system gateway. The gateway 26 compares the channel or content authorizations from the list to the channel request from the first user device and communicates to the first user device a channel or content corresponding to the channel request in response to comparing. Thus, authorized users are able to receive the channel or content in response to the list. The list may be generated at a subscriber information module 52 and communicated with the content or channel through a satellite 18 or through a communication network 50.

The generating of the merged policy includes: merging conditions and rules of policies including the first conditions and rules to generate the merged policy based on a predetermined hierarchy of the policies. Rules and conditions of the merged policy are multi-dimensional to include customer, POP device, and provider dimensions; and generating a configuration file including conditions or condition based parameters.
