  • Publication number: 20160047657
Abstract: AROTAN provides for autonomous terrain aided navigation that is fully independent of the position uncertainty of the vehicle during flight. AROTAN aligns a grid to the search space and periodically updates the search space during the measurement history to account for growth in position uncertainty. AROTAN computes terrain sufficiency statistics for a moving history to provide robust criteria for when to perform the correlation. A post-correlation refinement provides an additional correction of the horizontal position error and a correction of the altitude. AROTAN can quickly provide the vehicle's location based on the correlation from a single measurement history.

  • Publication number: 20150316363
Abstract: A projectile, such as a guided mortar projectile, has both a front obturator and an aft obturating device. The aft obturating device is located aft of the front obturator, and serves to trap pressurized gases behind the aft obturating device, so as to provide further propulsion to the projectile with the trapped pressurized gases, even after the front obturator has cleared the muzzle of a launcher. The aft obturating device provides less resistance to movement of pressurized gases across the aft obturating device in the aft direction, than to movement of pressurized gases across the aft obturating device in the forward direction, and may act as a check valve with regard to such gas flows. The aft obturating device may be part of a cap that is coupled to a tail boom of the projectile, and that drops away from the projectile after launch.

  • Publication number: 20150241180
Abstract: A countermeasure system for intercepting an incoming weapon, such as a rocket propelled grenade (RPG), includes a launcher that is used to launch a countermeasure. A door covers and protects the countermeasure in an opening in the launcher prior to the launch of the countermeasure. The door is separated (pushed away) from launcher when the countermeasure is launched, for example being pushed out into a flight path of the countermeasure by the countermeasure itself. The door may be attached to the countermeasure, or may be a separate piece that flies away from both the countermeasure and the launcher after launch of the countermeasure. Pitch over motors or other orientation adjustment devices may be used to change the orientation of the countermeasure after launch. The countermeasure may be used to defeat the incoming weapon in any of a variety ways.

  • Publication number: 20150204640
Abstract: An explosive device includes a housing and an explosive charge within the housing. The explosive charge includes a primary explosive charge and a shaped charge placed against an inside surface of the housing. The explosive device may further include a buffering material that separates the shaped charge and the primary explosive charge. • Publication number: 20150161475
Abstract: The disclosure provides a filtering engine for selecting a subset of hyperspectral imaging wavebands having information useful for detecting a target in a scene. Selecting these wavebands, called “sparse bands,” is an iterative process. One or more search techniques of varying computational complexity are used in the process. The techniques rely on various selection criteria, including a signal to clutter ratio that measures the “goodness” of band selection. A convenient example of the filtering engine uses several of the techniques together in a layered approach. In this novel approach, simpler computational techniques are applied, initially, to reduce a number of bands. More computationally intensive techniques then search the reduced band space. Accordingly, the filtering engine efficiently selects a set of sparse bands tailored for each target and each scene, and maintains some of the detection capability provided with a full set of wavebands.

  • Publication number: 20150025856
Abstract: A method includes simulating operation of a fiber optic gyroscope during a digital simulation. The simulation includes performing an iterative loop that includes simulating an intensity of light from a fiber coil of the fiber optic gyroscope and simulating operation of one or more control loops within the fiber optic gyroscope using the simulated intensity of the light. The intensity of the light is simulated using a sine/cosine function based on at least one angular rate-related effect injected into the simulation as a Sagnac phase shift. The simulated operation of a first of the one or more control loops attempts to reduce or eliminate the Sagnac phase shift. The method also includes storing, outputting, and/or using results of the simulation. The at least one angular rate-related effect could include rotation of the fiber coil and/or mechanical vibration of the fiber coil.

  • Publication number: 20150013563
Abstract: An obturator can be secured to a projectile to be launched from within a launch tube. The obturator cooperates with the projectile to seal a pressurized gas within the launch tube during launch. The obturator has a plurality of segments that combine to form a ring. Each segment has connecting features that cooperate with corresponding connecting features of an adjacent segment to hold the segments together by restricting relative circumferential movement, without restricting radially outward movement of individual segments. Preferably, each segment is identical, making it easier to repair and assemble the obturator. Upon launch, the obturator segments can move radially outwardly to separate into relatively small, uniformly-sized pieces.

  • Publication number: 20150015869
Abstract: A weapon-locating ladar system estimates a backward trajectory of an airborne target by using flow field measurements to follow the wake turbulence trailing the airborne target from a position at which the target is detected backwards until the wake is no longer observable. The system may use the backward trajectory to estimate the point-of-origin of the target. The system may also use the flow field measurements along the backward trajectory to classify the target. Target classification may be used to refine the point-of-origin estimate, to influence counter-fire or to adapt the flow field measurements.
