Patent number: 9321516Abstract: A watercraft propulsion system has a driveshaft, an impeller or a propeller, an overrunning clutch, an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The overrunning clutch has a first race and a second race. The first race is one of an inner race and an outer race. The second race is an other one of the inner race and the outer race. The first race is connected to the driveshaft for driving the driveshaft. The electric motor has a motor output shaft operatively connected to the first race. The internal combustion engine has an engine output shaft operatively connected to the second race. The overrunning clutch is connected to the motor output shaft and the engine output shaft such that the electric motor is able to selectively rotate the first race at a higher speed than the second race. A watercraft having the propulsion system is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2014Date of Patent: April 26, 2016Assignee: CONSORTIUM DE RECHERCHE BRP—UNIVERSITE DE SHERBROOKE S.E.N.C.Inventors: Eric Lafreniere, Real Dupont, Roger Rioux, Simon Richard

Patent number: 8979603Abstract: A watercraft propulsion system has a driveshaft, one of an impeller and a propeller, an overrunning clutch having outer and inner races, a driveshaft connector connecting the driveshaft to the outer race, an electric motor having a motor output shaft operatively connected to the outer race, and an internal combustion engine. The engine has a crankcase and a crankshaft operatively connected to the inner race. A lubricant pump supplies lubricant to the overrunning clutch via lubricant passages in the crankshaft. A watercraft having the propulsion system and a hybrid propulsion conversion system for a watercraft are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2014Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: Consortium de Recherche BRP—Universite de Sherbrooke S.E.N.C.Inventors: Roger Rioux, Simon Richard, Eric Lafreniere, Real Dupont, Maxime Desjardins-Goulet

Patent number: 8608522Abstract: A jet propulsion unit has a water inlet, a pump body, an impeller, and a valve assembly fluidly. The valve assembly has a valve housing having an inlet fluidly connected to the pump body, a first outlet and a second outlet. A valve body is disposed in the valve housing and is movable between first and second positions. In the first position, water from a body of water flows consecutively through the water inlet, the pump body, the inlet of the valve housing, the valve housing and the first outlet of the valve housing. In the second position, water from the body of water flows consecutively through the water inlet, the pump body, the inlet of the valve housing, the valve housing, and the second outlet of the valve housing. A watercraft having the jet propulsion unit is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2011Date of Patent: December 17, 2013Assignee: Consortium de Recherche BRP-Universite de Sherbrooke S.E.N.C.Inventors: Gilbert Lefrancois, Real Dupont, Simon Richard, Roger Rioux

Publication number: 20030213419Abstract: A personal watercraft is described having a hull, an engine disposed in the hull, a propulsion unit driven by the engine, and a steering unit to steer the propulsion unit. A deck is supported above the hull. The deck includes an opening therethrough to provide access to the engine. A pedestal is disposed on the deck and releasably fastened to the deck. The pedestal includes an opening therethrough. The pedestal opening is disposed at a position vertically above the deck opening. A seat is supported by the pedestal and releasably fastened thereto. The seat is moveable from a first position where the seat covers the pedestal opening to at least a second position where the seat does not cover the pedestal opening.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 21, 2003Publication date: November 20, 2003Inventors: Dany Duval, Shannon Cassell, Martin Pelletier, Real Dupont
