DIRECT LIQUID COOLING SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MAGNETS OF INTERIOR PERMANENT MAGNET ELECTRIC MACHINES
Publication number: 20240348117Abstract: Presented are direct liquid cooling systems for regulating magnet temperature of electric machines, methods for making/using such systems, and motor vehicles equipped with traction motors having magnets cooled by such systems. An electric machine includes a stator assembly that is located inside a protective outer housing. The stator assembly includes one or more electromagnetic windings mounted onto a stator core. A rotor assembly is rotatably attached to the housing, coaxial with and spaced from the stator assembly. The rotor assembly includes one or more permanent magnets mounted to a rotor core. The rotor core includes one or more radially elongated feed grooves that are fluidly connected to one or more axially elongated feed channels. The rotor feed groove(s) fluidly connect to a direct liquid cooling system to receive therefrom a liquid coolant. Each rotor feed channel transports the liquid coolant into direct contact with a target surface of a magnet.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2023Publication date: October 17, 2024Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Rebecca K. Patent number: 11035412Abstract: A bearing assembly and method of installation. A ball bearing includes an outer race, an inner race, and a separate L-shaped sleeve. In one embodiment, the sleeve is comprised of an axially extending body and a radially extending flange. The axially extending body is configured to be located between an inner diameter of the inner race and a transmission shaft, and the radially extending flange is configured to be located between an inner side surface of the inner race and the transmission shaft. The L-shaped sleeve with splines makes it feasible to sequentially press fit both the inner race and the outer race of the ball bearing. The spline in the axially extending body of the sleeve can slip-fit with the transmission shaft, allowing for ease of assembly, and enabling a press-fit connection between the ball bearing outer race and housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2018Date of Patent: June 15, 2021Assignee: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Rebecca K. Publication number: 20210083546Abstract: A propulsion system for a motor vehicle includes a casing having first and second housing portions cooperating with one another to define a cavity. The propulsion system further includes an electric motor disposed within the cavity. A support mechanism is attached to at least one of the first and second housing portions. The support mechanism includes a first side that faces the first housing portion and a second side that faces the second housing portion and is disposed within the cavity. Bearing seats are formed in the first housing portion, the second housing portion, and the second side of the support mechanism. Bearings are engaged with an associated one of the bearing seats and are configured to rotatably support the input member, the layshaft, and the output member in a fixed-free bearing arrangement. The first side of the support mechanism is free of the bearing seats and the bearings.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2019Publication date: March 18, 2021Inventors: Pete R.
