  • Patent number: 11911743
Abstract: Sorbent materials that are treated with ions, salts, oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates of calcium, magnesium, strontium, or barium are useful in removing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), 2,3,3,3,-tetrafluoro-2-(heptafluoropropoxy)propanoate and heptafluoropropyl 1,2,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl ether, and similar compounds from liquids and gases are disclosed. The sorbent materials with the disclosed treatments offer improved performance as measured against untreated sorbent materials.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 3, 2020
Date of Patent: February 27, 2024
    Assignee: CALGON CARBON CORPORATION
Inventors: Rebecca L. Distefano, Richard A. Mimna
  • Publication number: 20240024846
Abstract: There is provided herein a method of reducing the backwash frequency required in water treatment facilities which includes utilizing a surface-modified activated carbon. A method of preparing said surface-modified activated carbon is also provided. The method of preparing may include oxidizing an activated carbon with a chemical oxidant, which may result in surface functionalization of the activated carbon.

    Publication date: January 25, 2024
    Applicant: CALGON CARBON CORPORATION
Inventors: Adam M. REDDING, Rebecca L. DISTEFANO
  • Publication number: 20220017386
Abstract: The disclosure provides sorbents and sorbents that improve the adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The sorbents and sorbents have microstructures that efficiently adsorb PFAS, as shown by the combination of high volumetric iodine number and high volumetric molasses number. Methods of manufacturing and methods of use are further provided.
