    Abstract: A heads-up display includes a thin-film transistor (TFT) panel, along with at least one reflective polarizer subassembly. Each of the at least one reflective polarizer subassembly includes a clear substrate having opposing first and second surfaces. The first surface is connected to the TFT panel, and the second surface has a polarizing film laminated thereto. The first surface of the clear substrate is textured, frosted, or the like such that when it is attached to the TFT panel it inhibits bonding between the clear substrate and the TFT panel that would cause optical defects.

The HUD device also includes a first mirror that includes a transparent portion on a first side of the first mirror and a diffusive portion on a second side of the first mirror, and the light beams are configured to pass through the first mirror. The HUD device also comprises a second mirror that is configured to reflect the light beams toward a first reflective surface, and the second mirror is configured to reflect the light beams subsequent to the light beams passing through the first mirror.

The gauge assembly may include a dial face having a translucent portion forming at least a perimeter of the dial face and a cover disposed behind the dial. The cover may define a plurality of graduated lines, at least one of the graduated lines having a first portion extending behind the translucent portion and a second portion extending outward from the perimeter of the dial face. The first portion may be visible through the translucent portion when the gauge is illuminated by the light source and obscured by the translucent portion when the gauge is not illuminated by the light source.

    Abstract: An indicating instrument for a vehicle may employ an analog type lighted pointer arranged on a rotatable, circular shaped pointer disk, a liquid crystal display arranged over the pointer disk, and a first dial with indicia located outboard of or adjacent to and/or inboard of the LCD. A second or inboard dial may be located over the liquid crystal display. The pointer disk may be a translucent light collector for the pointer yet also transmit light to provide backlighting for the LCD. Depending upon the analog gauge arrangement, the pointer may point outboard of the pointer disk or toward the LCD center. The dials, especially the second dial, may be in the shape of rings to permit viewing of the LCD from the perspective of a viewer, such as a vehicle driver.

A second piece resides over the first piece and has a through hole that corresponds to the boss and aligns with the hole in the first piece. A bevel at the end of the second piece is utilized to initially contact the boss during installation of the second piece over the first piece. The second piece biases and then snaps into place to permit a tight and secured fit of the second piece on the first piece. A third piece that lies upon the second piece, the third piece defining a third hole that is aligned with the first and second holes. In aligning the hole of the third piece with that of the first and second, the third piece may abut the boss. A threaded screw through the holes holds the three pieces together.
