  • Publication number: 20170234689
Abstract: A route risk mitigation system and method using real-time information to improve the safety of vehicles operating in semi-autonomous or autonomous modes. The method mitigates the risks associated with driving by assigning real-time risk values to road segments and then using those real-time risk values to select less risky travel routes, including less risky travel routes for vehicles engaged in autonomous driving over the travel routes. The route risk mitigation system may receive location information, real-time operation information, (and/or other information) and provide updated associated risk values. In an embodiment, separate risk values may be determined for vehicles engaged in autonomous driving over the road segment and vehicles engaged in manual driving over the road segment.

  • Publication number: 20170221149
Abstract: A system for determining a subjective risk score may include a vehicle and/or a computing device associated with a user travelling within the vehicle. The computing device may receive input from the user when the user feels a sense of unease regarding a particular road segment upon which the vehicle is traveling. The system may further include a subjective risk analysis computing system that may be communicatively coupled to the computing device. The subjective risk analysis computing system may receive subjective risk information corresponding to the user's sense of unease regarding particular road segments and may process the subjective risk information to determine a subjective risk score for each of a plurality of road segments along a route. An insurance company may use this information to determine whether to adjust a quote or premium of an insurance policy.

  • Patent number: 9607526
Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, software, and apparatuses provide a tool for use by drivers and/or coaches throughout the pre-license stage of obtaining a driver's license. A pre-license program may control a computing device to collect drive data while a driver is driving a vehicle. This drive data may be used to detect a drive event. Then, the computing device may present coaching information associated with the detected drive event. The coaching information may provide a passenger, such as a coach or parent, with real-time advice for instructing the driver how to improve his/her driving skills. Moreover, the drive data collected may be used to prepare reports providing feedback to the drivers and coaches.

  • Publication number: 20160379310
Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, systems and apparatuses for determining and implementing risk unit usage-based insurance policies. In some arrangements, sensor data associated with vehicle operation data, driving data, and the like, may be received and analyzed to determine a consumption rate of risk units in the risk unit usage-based insurance policy. In some examples, one or more driving behaviors may also be identified (e.g., from the sensor data, historical data, and the like). In some examples, one or more user interfaces may be generated displaying the determined consumption rate and/or driving behaviors. In some arrangements, additional information, such as one or more recommendations for improving (e.g., reducing) consumption rate may be generated and provided via the generated user interface.

  • Publication number: 20160171521
Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, systems and apparatuses for determining a safest road segment for traveling between a first location and a second location are provided. In some cases, the road segment safety rating may be determined for a plurality of road segments between the first location and the second location based on historical data associated with the road segments (e.g., accident history data, traffic volume data, etc.) and/or based on driving behavior data of the operator of the vehicle. An indication of the road segment determined as being the safest may be provided to the operator of the vehicle. An actual route of travel of the vehicle can be captured and compared to the safest route. If the vehicle has traveled the safest route, the operator may earn an award. If not, the operator may be notified that an award may be earned when an indicated safest route is traveled.

  • Publication number: 20160086285
Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, systems and apparatuses for determining a road segment safety rating are provided. In some arrangements, the road segment safety rating may be based on historical data associated with the road segment (e.g., accident history data, traffic volume data, etc.). In other examples, the road segment safety rating may be based on historical data as well as driving behavior data of the operator of the vehicle. In some arrangements, the determined road segment safety rating may be compared to a threshold. If the road segment safety rating is below the threshold, the system may generate one or more alternate road segments or route for the driver to consider. In some examples, the road segment safety rating may be used to determine an insurance premium or one or more insurance incentives to provide to the user.
