    Abstract: A surgical tool arrangement a handpiece which is capable of accepting and operating a number of different surgical tools or instruments adapted for use with the handpiece, each having one or multiple functions. The handpiece incorporates a coupling arrangement located at a distal end thereof which serves to attach the desired surgical instrument to the hand-piece via a locking mechanism, and also provides an electrical contact arrangement to support the functioning of an electrosurgical probe as well as a combined mechanical cutting and electrosurgical tool. Additionally, the handpiece accepts a conventional cutter which only requires power for driving a movable cutting element.

    Abstract: A pump for rapidly discharging irrigation fluid to a surgical site. The pump includes a cabinet with an opening. Inside the pump there is a static plate and a dynamic plate that extends towards/retracts from the static plate. The space between the plates is a bag well in which a bag containing irrigation fluid can be inserted/replaced through the cabinet opening. A lid covers the opening. A sensor monitors the open/closed state of the lid. A drive motor actuates the dynamic plate. A control unit regulates the actuation of the motor. Only when the lid sensor determines that the lid is closed does the control unit actuate the motor. The dynamic plate can be placed in various open positions relative to the static plate so bags containing different volumes of fluid can be used with the pump.

    Abstract: An electrosurgical suction/irrigation instrument includes a shaft hub, an electrically conductive member, and a sheath. The conductive member has a proximal end mounted to the shaft hub and a distal end including a conductive operating tip. The sheath covers the conductive member so that the operating tip is covered when the sheath is in an extended position and exposed when the sheath is in a retracted position. The sheath hub is coupled to the sheath and is movably engaged with the shaft hub. The surgical instrument further includes a locking mechanism to lock the sheath in the retracted position, and a bias element to bias the sheath toward the extended position.
