Patent number: 11236980Abstract: A holding device and method for decreasing the contact-impact event on sub-projectiles when fired from a barrel, cylinder, carrier shell or the like includes a core and at least two legs that at least partially enclose at least one sub-projectile each. When a projectile is fired from a barrel or the like the sub-projectiles load the legs of the device which are deformed and open up and release the sub-projectiles in a controlled manner without tumbling which leads them to hit and penetrate their target with the short-side. A holding device including sub-projectiles and a projectile including the holding device are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2018Date of Patent: February 1, 2022Assignee: BAE SYSTEMS BOFORS ABInventors: Christer Thuman, Ulf Heiche, Reijo Vesa

Patent number: 7147181Abstract: The invention relates to a canard fin unit intended for guiding artillery projectiles (1) fired on ballistic trajectories, which comprises a number of identical canard fins, deployable from a first passive, retracted position into a second active position once the projectile (1) associated with the fin unit has been launched from the barrel from which it is intended to be fired, the canard fins (3a–d) in the active position being individually controllable. The invention resides in the fact that each canard fin (3a–d) is individually supported and controlled in its own swivel arm (6a–d), extending in the longitudinal direction of the projectile, which arm is in turn pivoted about its own swivel shaft (7a–d) arranged transversely to the direction of flight of the projectile, the swivel arms (6a–d) of all canard fins (3a–d) being moved together from the retracted to the deployed position by one and the same operating element (10), displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the projectile.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2001Date of Patent: December 12, 2006Assignee: BAE Systems Bofors ABInventors: Lennart Selin, Reijo Vesa

Patent number: 5277115Abstract: A method is provided for retarding the movement of the flip-out target tracker during a final part of a flip-out without the contents or journalling of the target tracker being damaged. The flip-out target tracker is on a sub-combat unit which is transported by a carrier body to a predetermined target area in order to be activated at the target area during flip-out of the target tracker. The target tracker scans the target area during the braked fall of the sub-combat unit and identifies and combats targets by means of an integrated warhead. The retardation is effected with a flexible brake band. The brake band is initially folded and attached to the target tracker at a first anchorage point in the proximity of a portion of the target tracker which, during flip-out, moves the longest distance. The brake band is stretched past an elastically deformable damper body secured in a main portion of the sub-combat unit.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1992Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: Bofors ABInventor: Reijo Vesa

Patent number: 5155294Abstract: A submunition which is arranged to be separated from a missile or projectile for example, a shell canister or the like, over a target area including an active part, in the form of a warhead, a target detector and means for imparting to the submunition a controlled rotation for scanning of the target area in a helical pattern during the descent of the submunition towards the target area. The target detector is displaceable in order to allow a free view at the side of the warhead. The two diametrically situated aerofoils are pivotable from a folded position, in which the aerofoils connect with the outer surface of the submunition, to a 90.degree. unfolded position, in which the two aerofoils form a braking area for controlling the rate of descent of the submunition. The two aerofoils are pivotally arranged via a double joint.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1991Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Assignee: AB BoforsInventor: Reijo Vesa

Patent number: 5088414Abstract: A subwarhead adapted for separation from a missile, for example a carrier shell or the like, over a target area comprises an active part, a target detector and an arrangement which imparts a rotation to the subwarhead for scanning of the target area in a helical pattern during the descent of the subwarhead towards the target area, the target detector being arranged displaceably in order to allow a free view at the side of the active part. Two diametrically situated aerofoils are pivotable, each on its own shaft situated in a plane which is at right angles to the axis of symmetry of the active part, from a folded position, in which the aerofoils connect with the outer surface of the subwarhead, to a position folded out by 90.degree., in which the two aerofoils form a braking area for controlling the rate of descent of the subwarhead.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1990Date of Patent: February 18, 1992Assignee: Aktiebolaget BoforsInventor: Reijo Vesa
