  • Patent number: 7515540
Abstract: A device and method for controlling data unit communications between a sender and a receiver, and flexibly responding to a potential date loss event. Data units are transmitted from the sender to the receiver, and the receiver returns an acknowledgment data unit for each data unit received. If the receiver falls to receive a data unit, the sender retransmits the data unit in accordance with a data unit loss response procedure. If the potentially lost data unit is subsequently received, the sender determines whether the correctly received data unit was the initial data unit or the retransmission. If the correctly received data unit was the retransmission, the sender continues to transmit subsequent data units in accordance with the date unit loss response procedure. However, if the correctly received data unit was the initial data unit the sender transmits subsequent data units in accordance with an excessive delay response procedure.

  • Publication number: 20090052402
Abstract: A technique of configuring link layer entities for a handover is described. In a method embodiment, the technique includes receiving from a recipient of protocol data units a supplemental status report for an existing ARQ connection in context with an imminent handover, determining service data units corresponding to buffered protocol data units taking into account information included in the supplemental report, and transferring the determined service data units to a link layer entity which is to establish a new ARQ connection to the recipient. The forced status synchronisation that is based on the supplemental report prevents the transfer of service data units that have already been successfully received at the recipient.

  • Publication number: 20080317017
Abstract: New methods and devices for implementing an ARQ mechanism over a multi-hop connection (sender-relay-receiver) are proposed. A communication protocol is described in accordance with which data units are arranged in a sequence and each sent data unit is identifiable by a sequence position identifier. The sender implements a sending peer, the relay a relay peer and the receiver a receiving peer. Feedback messages are exchanged, which using said sequence position identifiers, carry information on a receipt of sent data units. The communication protocol provides for at least a first type and a second type of receipt information, the first type (RACK) of receipt information being indicative of a correct receipt of a data unit at a relay peer of said communication protocol, and the second type (ACK) of receipt information being indicative of a correct receipt of a data unit at a final destination peer of said communication protocol.

  • Publication number: 20080285491
Abstract: A technique is provided for processing data in a packet-based communications environment. A single data packet is encapsulated into a single link layer packet data unit. The link layer unit is encoded to form at least one code block. After the currently available radio resource capacity during a fixed duration transmission interval has been determined, bits within the code block are selected to fit into or otherwise match the radio resource capacity. Thereafter, the selected bits are transmitted via a physical layer. In some variations, unsolicited redundant sets of bits are transmitted thereafter to facilitate successful receipt.

  • Publication number: 20080287136
Abstract: The present invention relates to a first node and a second node in a mobile telecommunication network. The network comprises a first node, a second node and a third node, wherein the first node is connectable to the second node and the second node is connectable to the first node and to the third node and the third node is connectable to the second node. A system function is realized by the execution of a master-process implemented in the first node and a slave-process implemented in the third node, wherein the execution of the master-process realizes a control function associated with the system function. The master-process of the first node is adapted to temporarily delegate the responsibility to realize the control function to a master-proxy-process implemented in the second node and the master-proxy-process implemented in the second node is adapted to take over the responsibility to realize the control function from the master-process of the first node.

  • Patent number: 7382763
Abstract: In the present invention, the implementation of a protocol that embeds packets is made sensitive to the type of data being embedded, so that adjustable parameters can be set automatically at the layer providing the parameters being adjusted in accordance with the packets being embedded. Thus it is taken into account that the data in packets being received from a higher layer in order to be encapsulated or segmented and sent further (either directly into the link or on to lower layer), may be classified into different categories with respect to the adjustable parameters, where the parameters can automatically be adjusted for an individual packet in accordance with the category into which is classified.

  • Publication number: 20080126562
Abstract: A method of controlling the flow of an amount of data from a sending peer to a receiving peer of a predetermined communication protocol is described. The method comprises dividing the amount of data into a plurality of data segments, where the data segments are ordered in a sequence. The segments are sent to the receiving peer in the order of said sequence. The receiving peer acknowledges the correct receipt of a data segment and identifies the last correctly received data segment of the sequence that was received in the proper order of the sequence. The sending peer is arranged such that if it receives a threshold number of duplicate acknowledgements, it performs a retransmission. The threshold number that trigger a retransmission is an adaptive parameter determined based on the size of a receive window, the size of the receive window representing a number of data segments which can be stored in a buffer space at the receiving peer.

  • Publication number: 20080089314
Abstract: The invention relates to retransmissions in wireless communication systems. It is proposed to reduce the retransmission delays by utilizing feedback associated with a lower protocol layer than the conventional feedback messages of the ARQ functionality. After sending a packet from a transmitter towards a receiver, the transmitter monitors the link for a low-level control signal from the receiver. The low-level control information can e.g. comprise power control commands or be related to link quality indicators. Based on this signal, it is decided whether a retransmission is to take place, e.g. at the transmitter or at an external control unit.

  • Publication number: 20070259673
Abstract: Different types of traffic requiring different inactivity timer settings are assigned to different bearers or to different QoS classes. Different inactivity timer settings are established for different traffic types. Individual bearers or individual QoS classes are linked to a corresponding inactivity timer profile. The link may be accomplished in a number of ways. For example, an additional QoS parameter may be employed in a 3GPP QoS profile, or a new QoS class identifier may be mapped to an inactivity timer setting. Different inactivity timer settings allows both UE battery power conservation to be prioritized for some traffic and end-user experience (quick subsequent response times) to be prioritized for other traffic.

  • Patent number: 7254765
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for transmitting error-tolerant data is disclosed employing the ARQ technique, wherein the retransmission of erroneous data is performed up to the point where the remaining amount of errors is acceptable (for instance because the erorrs will not be perceived by the recipient of the information, which can be a person or a higher level protocol with additional error correction capabilities). The number of data blocks (RLC) detected as erroneous is employed to define a reliability measure (RM) and a request for retransmission of the erroneous data blocks is performed until a desired reliability threshold (RT) is reached. An additional threshold with a higher value than the first one can be employed to request for optional retransmission when the reliability measure (RM) is between the first and the second threshold. The retransmission will be performed only if further conditions such as channel availability are met.

  • Publication number: 20070064716
Abstract: It is proposed to modify data unit handling on the side of a sender (e.g. a sending end-point or a proxy) by introducing congestion notification prevention information into data units, such that a queue buffer that implements a procedure for performing congestion notification with respect to one or more queued data units (e.g. dropping and/or marking data units with explicit congestion information) is capable of preventing the performance of a congestion notification at least with respect to the data units containing the congestion notification prevention information.
