  • Patent number: 6565034
Abstract: A method and apparatus for connecting a trailing end of a cardboard or paper web running off an unwinding roll with a leading end of a new wound roll. A splice beam engages a trailing end of an unwinding roll and severs the trailing end from the residue on the unwound roll while applying a first adhesive strip thereto. The splice beam then presses that trailing end against the leading end of a new roll which has previously been provided with a second adhesive strip so that the trailing end is bonded by the splice beam to the leading end with the two adhesive strips thereby leaving little or no unbonded web at the connection.

  • Patent number: 5853139
Abstract: A winding machine for producing rolls (3) having a pressure roller system which includes a horizontal, vertically movable cross-head (8) to which a series of freely rotatable and individually movable roll segments (9) are secured side-by-side and with bolts parallel to the cross-head (8). In addition, there are piston/cylinder units (10) for adjusting the pressure exerted by the roll segments (9) on the rolls (3). Into the bearing of each roll segment (9) on the cross-head (8) is integrated a component which either increases the bearing pressure as the distance between the roll segment (9) and the cross-head decreases or decreases the bearing pressure as the distance between the roll segment (9) and the cross-head increases. Thus the most uniform possible pressure on all rolls (3) is ensured and negative effects owing to excessive differences in diameter between the rolls (3) are prevented.

  • Patent number: 5518199
Abstract: An elongated support roller centered on and rotatable about a horizontal axis radially engages at least one row of takeup rolls coaxial to a takeup-roll axis parallel to the support-roller axis and including at least one central roll and a pair of end rolls axially flanking the central roll. A relatively wide paper web fed to the support roller passes through a slitter between the web supply and the support roller for slitting the web into a plurality of strips including at least one central strip and a pair of end strips flanking the end strip. The central and end strips pass at least partially around the support roller and are wound on the respective central and end rolls. The support roller is rotated about its axis so that the strips wind at least partially around the support roller and at least the central roll is rotated by engagement with the support roll. Respective end-roll periphery drives radially engage the end rolls for rotating same at a greater peripheral speed than the support roller.

  • Patent number: 5360180
Abstract: A relatively wide strip of paper is slitted longitudinally into a plurality of strips that are fed to a rotating relatively wide main roller. A plurality of pairs of support heads are arranged in two rows extending along the main roller with the rows spaced angularly from each other. Each pair of support heads is spaced in the respective row axially from the other support heads of the respective row and each pair is adapted to engage in an end of a roll core about which a respective one of the strips is wound. A drive rotates the main roller and thereby winds the strips up on the respective roll cores. Two respective vertically movable unloading beams extend axially along the main roller underneath the respective rows of support heads substantially the full length of the main roller. Respective guides extend along each of the beams substantially the full length of the main roller and respective carriages associated with the holder pairs can travel along the guides of the respective beams.

  • Patent number: 5123605
Abstract: A mechanism for tensioning and positioning reel cores, especially in machines for winding and unwinding webs of paper and cardboard, having a cylindrical eccentric tensioning component (10) that is mounted on a journal rigidly connected to a driveshaft or brake shaft, that expands radially when its circumference moves relative to the journal, and that interlocks with the core by way of elevations distributed around its outside circumference. A cylindrical positioning head with a smooth surface is concentrically connected to the driveshaft or brake shaft and is followed by the tensioning component. The diameter of the positioning head equals the inside diameter of the core. The tensioning component is axially shorter than the positioning head. The outside diameter of the unexpanded tensioning component is slightly longer than the outside diameter of the positioning head and is concentric with it.

  • Patent number: 4805847
Abstract: A device for threading a web of flexible material through the array of rollers of a machine, e.g. a coiler for the web, utilizes an endless guide wire guided over deflection rolls integrated with those web-guide rolls which are located along the underside of the web. The wire-deflection rolls associated with the web-guide rolls along the upper surface of the web are spaced therefrom and have means cooperating with the kite wire attaching the leading end of the web to the guide wire for deflecting the kite wire off these deflecting rolls so that the deflecting rolls can be located centrally of the web-guide path.

  • Patent number: 4775110
Abstract: The apparatus for automatically cutting and rolling up a sheet of material comprises a winder with a least one feed drum. The winder cuts the sheet of material, advantageously first the winder weakens the sheet of material along a cutting line. Then the sheet is cut through or severed by braking. The beginning of a new sheet formed by the cutting is attached to a new roll core by the winder after ejecting the finished rolled up roll and the beginning of the new sheet of material is held fixed during cutting by vacuum on the outer surface of the feed drum.

  • Patent number: 4155515
Abstract: A winding station for webs comprises a plurality of knives disposed side by side and which are laterally displaceable along the width of a web to predetermined positions for slitting the web into a plurality of narrower webs. A guide roller is disposed downstream of the knife and a plurality of pairs of winding frames are disposed in at least two rows in a staggered relationship on opposite sides of the guide roller. The winding frames are laterally displaceable into positions corresponding to the positions of the knives by means of servomotors. The winding frames bear projecting chucks for receiving winding spools thereon and gripper cones over the winding chucks which are expandable radially by axial displacement. A program control effects the positioning of the winding frames to align the gripper cones with the knives.
