  • Patent number: 5526843
Abstract: The invention relates to a venting valve for a fuel tank and includes a valve seat and a valve body which lies in sealing contact engagement therewith. The sealing surface of the valve seat faces toward the interior space of the tank in order to ensure an operationally-reliable venting even after long periods of operation without the danger of an outflow of fuel. The opening movement of the valve body is directed toward the interior space of the tank. A fine-porous air filter made of sinter material is mounted forward of the valve seat when viewed in flow direction toward the interior of the tank.

  • Patent number: 5272813
Abstract: The invention is directed to a portable handheld work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw. The work apparatus includes a housing having a forward end wall, a rearward end wall defining a plane and a top wall extending between the end walls. A handle is mounted on the top wall for holding and guiding the work apparatus. A work tool is arranged on the forward end wall and a drive motor is mounted in the housing for driving the work tool. A holding lug is provided on the rearward end wall and is pivotable between a rest position wherein the holding lug is recessed in a recess formed in the rearward end wall and an in-use position wherein the holding lug is outside of the recess. The holding lug defines an eyelet through which an operator can pass a rope for holding the work apparatus by attaching the same to a belt or the like thereby freeing the hands of the operator.

  • Patent number: 5233945
Abstract: The invention relates to a portable handheld work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw having an internal combustion engine, a fuel tank and an apparatus housing. The engine has a crankcase and at least one cylinder. The fuel tank is attached to the crankcase at a distance by means of two flanges whereby a mounting space is provided between the flanges, the crankcase and the fuel tank. This mounting space accommodates necessary components of the work apparatus and is closed by cover plates attached to the crankcase and the fuel tank or on the flanges.

  • Patent number: 5233750
Abstract: The invention is directed to a motor-driven chain saw having a housing and a guide bar extending forward of the housing. The guide bar is clamped between the housing and a sprocket wheel cover. A brake device having a trigger configured as a hand guard is mounted in the sprocket wheel cover. The sprocket wheel is brought to standstill by the brake device when the trigger is actuated. With the sprocket wheel cover assembled, the hand guard is disposed transversely in front of the upper handle of the chain saw. In order to obtain a reliable triggering of the brake device, for example, during kickback and for a manual triggering at all areas of the hand guard, the hand guard is supported in a second bearing on the housing of the chain saw when mounting the sprocket wheel cover. In this way, torques acting in a direction opposite to the actuation of the hand guard are substantially avoided which could otherwise occur because of bearing play.

  • Patent number: 5199389
Abstract: The invention in directed to a work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw having a housing and an air-cooled internal combustion engine mounted therein. An exhaust-gas muffler is mounted in proximity to the cylinder of the engine. A flow of cooling air for cooling the cylinder is guided transversely through the housing. In order to obtain an efficient cooling, the muffler has an L-shaped housing and is configured to define a conducting wall for guiding the cooling air flow. One leg of the L-shaped housing is disposed approximately parallel to the flow direction of the cooling air on one side of the cylinder while the other housing leg lies transversely to the flow direction thereby causing the air of the air flow to partially back up. In this way, the side of the cylinder facing away from the flow direction is cooled with the cooling air being effective down to the base of the cooling ribs of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5018492
Abstract: The invention is directed to a work apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw or the like and is especially directed to a one-hand chain saw. The apparatus has a housing for an engine for driving the work tool and an air/fuel-mixture is metered to the engine. The chain saw includes one handle for carrying and guiding the apparatus with the handle including a hold handle portion aligned approximately in the longitudinal axis of the chain saw and disposed above the housing. The handle also includes a bail-type side handle portion arranged at an angle toward the forward end of the hold handle portion. The hold handle portion is widened transversely to the longitudinal axis at its rearward end to permit the one-hand chain saw to be reliably held and guided. The carburetor is mounted in the receiving chamber so that the housing of the work apparatus can be smaller and thereby enable the hold handle portion to be brought closer to the gravity center of the chain saw.

  • Patent number: 4836297
Abstract: A handheld portable tool has a drive unit connected to the handle via damping elements. The drive unit includes an internal combustion engine having a crankshaft. To reduce the vibration transmitted by the drive unit to the handles, a static or dynamic imbalance of defined position and quantity is provided on the crankshaft of the engine, as a result of which vibration in the handles is considerably reduced. An imbalancing weight may for instance be provided in the fan wheel, so that the crankshaft and its elements are manufactured and balanced in the same manner as before, and only the fan wheel has to be structurally modified.

  • Patent number: 4644658
Abstract: The invention is directed to a motor-driven apparatus such as a motor-driven chain saw or the like. It includes a lubricating-oil pump and an oil supply for a work tool and is equipped with a device for interrupting the supply of oil to the tool. This facilitates use of the chain saw apparatus with an accessory attachment work tool such as a hedge trimmer, drilling tool or the like for which a flow of lubricating oil is unnecessary.
