  • Publication number: 20020092145
Abstract: The method according to the invention for riveting, or self-piercing, by means of a riveting or self-piercing device (8), having a male die (3) guided by a pick-up device (4), both of which in each case can be moved towards a female die (5) and/or a workpiece (6), wherein the female die (5) and riveting or self-piercing device (8) will be connected to one another via a counterforce structure (9). The relative movement between the pick-up device (4) and the counterforce structure (9) is measured by a first sensor (1), and the relative movement between counterforce structure (9) and male die (3) is measured by a second sensor (2). The depth of the riveting or piercing is adjusted with the aid of the two measured values.

  • Publication number: 20020092158
Abstract: A rotary device for a rivet setting machine for self-punching rivets that includes a rotatable pick-up device (1) having an angle of rotation lock (2), wherein the angle of rotation lock (2) in the open state allows free rotation of the pick-up device (1) relative to a headpiece (12) and in the closed state stops the pick-up device (1) at predeterminable angle positions. An important feature of the present invention is that the pick-up device (1) in the open position permits free rotation, while in the closed position, stops its rotation relative to a headpiece (12) and this can be accomplished in a simple manner, manually and without the use of a separate or special tool.

  • Publication number: 20020048487
Abstract: A punch rivet (1) has a cutting edge (6) which is arranged on the end face of its rivet shank (2) and is formed in the cutting region by an outer face (5) extending parallel to the axis and a conical inner face (4) of the rivet shank (2). The outer face (5) extends continuously parallel to the axis over the entire rivet shank (2) and the punch rivet (1) is provided with the same cutting edges (6, 7) on either side in an axially symmetrical design in the form of a tube.

  • Publication number: 20010039718
Abstract: A riveting system is operable to join two or more workpieces with a rivet. In another aspect of the present invention, a self-piercing rivet is employed. Still another aspect of the present invention employs an electronic control unit and one or more sensors to determine a riveting characteristic and/or an actuator characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6308544
Abstract: The invention relates to a coated metal fastener that is prepared by electrogalvanically coating a metal fastener with a layer of tin and zinc mixed crystals, wherein the tin is from about 50 to about 90% by weight of the mixed crystals layer. The fastener plated with the tin and zinc alloy layer has a number of unexpected properties, including stability at higher temperatures than expected, which is important for retaining the strength of a vehicle joint secured with the fastener during subsequent finishing operations; retention of electrical conductivity, which makes the fastener suitable for use as a grounding member; and resistance to galvanic corrosion when the fastener joins metals of differing electrode potential.

  • Patent number: 6108890
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of removing punch rivets, which are set into a workpiece and have a male die end for driving the punch rivet and an opposite female die end which penetrates the workpiece. A pin is placed with its front end onto the male die end so as substantially to cover the latter and, with a simultaneous supply of energy through the pin, heats the contact area between pin and male die end up to a fusion temperature in the contact area, whereupon after cooling of the contact area the pin is retracted counter to the pressure of an abutment supported on the workpiece and carries along the punch rivet which is thereby withdrawn from the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5486678
Abstract: Process for welding a weld-in part in a weld point comprising a metal plate and a metal covering lying thereon with two tools of which one is formed by a welding head and the other by a drill for preparing the weld point by a drilling process. The drill attached to a revolving device initially in one operating position, by means of a lifting motor which can be moved in a controlled manner between a return position and a machining end-position and vice versa, performs the process at least until the metal plate is drilled (machining end-position) in preparation of the weld point. By pivoting of the revolving device, a welding head arranged on the revolving device and equipped with the weld-in part is then brought into an operating position above the prepared weld point to perform welding, meanwhile the drill is coupled to the lifting motor when the welding head is coupled to the lifting motor when the drill is uncoupled to perform welding on completion of the drilling process.
