  • Publication number: 20110146547
Abstract: The present invention provides a combustion furnace that comprises a combustion chamber defining a combustion zone within the combustion chamber and having at least one chamber wall facing the combustion zone, and at least one main particulate fuel burner mounted in a chamber wall and adapted to generate in the combustion zone a main flame directed away from the chamber wall by injecting oxidant in gaseous form and fuel in particulate form into the combustion zone for combustion therein. With regard to the combustion chamber, the main particulate fuel burner has associated therewith at least one auxiliary burner mounted in the burner wall. The auxiliary burner is located in the vicinity of the main particulate fuel burner and is adapted to generate an auxiliary flame in the combustion zone located proximate the chamber wall and at least partially directed towards the main particulate fuel burner.

  • Publication number: 20110151386
Abstract: The present invention provides a process for operating a combustion furnace, wherein the combustion furnace comprises a combustion chamber defining a combustion zone within the combustion chamber and having at least one chamber wall facing the combustion zone, and at least one particulate fuel burner mounted in a chamber wall and adapted to generate a flame in the combustion zone by injecting oxidant in gaseous form and fuel in particulate form into the combustion zone for combustion therein. In the process, at least one particulate fuel burner is operated so as to alternate between a first phase in which the burner generates a wide flame proximate the chamber wall into which the burner is mounted and a second phase in which the burner generates a narrower flame directed away from the chamber wall into which the burner is mounted.

  • Patent number: 7062912
Abstract: An air separation unit separates air into an oxygen-rich and oxygen-deficient gas. Fuel gas and the oxygen-rich gas are preheated at heat exchangers through which hot flue gas flows. Combustion of the preheated fuel and oxygen-rich gases result in the hot flue gas. The hot flue gas is cooled at the heat exchangers and flows through a waste heat boiler. Water and/or steam flowing through the waste heat boiler absorbs energy from the cooled flue gas thereby producing heated steam. The heated steam flows through a turbine to produce power. The power is transferred to the air separation unit, thus reducing a power requirement of the air separation unit needed to separate the air.

  • Patent number: 6783357
Abstract: A burner apparatus comprises a conduit adapted to convey preheated oxidant and having outlet and inlet ends, and a conduit adapted to convey preheated fuel and having outlet and inlet ends. The conduit adapted to convey preheated fuel is substantially parallel to the conduit adapted to convey preheated oxidant. The conduit adapted to convey preheated oxidant is positioned substantially vertically above the conduit adapted to convey preheated fuel. The conduit adapted to convey preheated oxidant and the conduit adapted to convey preheated fuel each are positioned within its own respective elongate cavity in a refractory burner block. Each of the conduits are positioned in their respective cavity such that a substantially annular region is present between an outer surface of each conduit and its respective cavity. Each conduit inlet end extends through a respective plenum for receiving an ambient temperature fluid, the plenums adapted to pass the ambient temperature fluid into the respective annular regions.

  • Patent number: 6544029
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for combusting a fuel with an oxidant are described, the apparatus comprising a ceramic burner block, the burner block having a back face and a front face. The burner block has at least one oxidant cavity in an upper portion of the burner block, and at least one fuel cavity in a lower portion of the burner block, each cavity extending from the back face to the front face. The at least one oxidant cavity has positioned therein a fuel supply conduit, the fuel supply conduit having a fuel supply conduit exit positioned a sufficient distance from the front face to allow combustion of at least a portion of fuel exiting the fuel supply conduit exit with at least some of the oxidant traversing the oxidant cavity, and the least one fuel cavity having connected thereto, near the back face, an oxidant conduit, thereby allowing mixing of a minor portion of the oxidant with the fuel.
