Abstract: Safety device composed of a radiation emitter, a radiation receiver disposed for receiving radiation which is produced by the emitter and which traverses a radiation path between the emitter and the detector, the detector producing an output signal representative of the quantity of radiation received by the detector, and an electronic circuit coupled to the detector for analyzing the output signal produced by the detector and identifying a reduction in the magnitude of the output signal as a result of an obstruction in the radiation path, wherein the emitter and the detector are mounted on a cooking appliance in a manner which allows extraneous radiation in the vicinity of the cooking appliance to traverse the radiation path.
