  • Patent number: 9481108
Abstract: Previously, in order to produce a dimensionally stable fused-quartz hollow cylinder, an output cylinder having a centre axis would have been prepared, said output cylinder being produced by means of a bore having a boring bar, said bore rotating about a horizontal axis of rotation, and by means of a boring head that has an internal bore and is fixed to said bore in a torsionally rigid manner, wherein the boring head adopts a continually changing boring head position that is continuously ascertained by means of a measuring device and is returned to a target position in the event of any deviation. The design outlay is high, however. The problem addressed by the invention is therefore that of providing a cost-effective method for producing a dimensionally stable fused-quartz hollow cylinder.

  • Patent number: 8783069
Abstract: In a known process for producing a quartz glass cylinder, a porous soot tube, which is sintered to form the quartz glass cylinder, is produced by depositing SiO2 particles on an outer cylindrical surface of a support, which rotates about the longitudinal axis thereof and has a layer of silicon carbide (SiC layer). In order on this basis to specify a support having a high resistance to fracture, which firstly can easily be removed and which secondly presents a low risk of contamination for the soot body, the invention proposes that the SiC layer is treated at a high temperature in an oxygen-containing atmosphere before the SiO2 particles are deposited, in such a manner that an SiO2 protective layer having a thickness of at least 0.1 ?m is produced by oxidation.

  • Patent number: 8590344
Abstract: The invention relates to a known method for the production of a cylinder from quartz glass, comprising a step, wherein an SiO2 body which comprises a porous SiO2 soot layer and has a lower end, an upper end, and an outer casing, is sintered to form said quartz glass cylinder in a vitrification furnace, and is being held in a vertical orientation by means of a retaining device, which comprises an upper retaining element connected at the upper end of the SiO2 body, and a lower retaining element disposed on the lower end. In order to provide a method based thereon, by means of which even heavy bodies made of porous SiO2 can be safely retained during vitrification, the invention provides that the retaining device has a dimensionally stable connecting part, which extends inside the vitrification furnace along the outer casing of the SiO2 body and which connects the upper and the lower retaining elements to each other.

  • Patent number: 7854146
Abstract: The production of an optical component from quartz glass by elongation of a coaxial arrangement of a core rod and a hollow cylinder is known. The arrangement is thus introduced into a heating zone, such that the lower end begins to partly soften and the component drawn from the softened part. According to the invention, a pseudo-continuous method for the formation of the restriction in the inner passage of the hollow cylinder on which the core rod is supported, is disclosed, whereby an upper hollow cylinder is fused end on with a lower hollow cylinder to form an axial composite cylinder, a core rod is introduced into the lower hollow cylinder and the axial cylinder composite partly softened and elongated to form the optical component.

  • Patent number: 7681416
Abstract: The production of an optical component from quartz glass, by elongation of a coaxial arrangement of a core rod and a hollow cylinder of a given length, is known. The arrangement is thus introduced into a heating zone with a vertical orientation, such that the lower end begins to partly soften and the component is drawn downwards from the softened part. The hollow cylinder has an inner passage, provided with a restriction in the region of the lower end thereof, on which the core rod is supported. Several methods are disclosed for formation of the restriction in which the inner passage (55) is mechanically machined to a final dimension and, in one version of the method, the restriction in the inner passage (55) is generated by means of softening the lower end face of the hollow cylinder, swaged against a tool and thus folded inwards with formation of a peripheral bead ring.

  • Publication number: 20060144094
Abstract: In a previously known method for producing a hollow cylinder made of synthetic quartz glass, a silicon-containing compound is flame-hydrolyzed and SiO2 particles are deposited layer by layer on a rotating support, resulting in the production of an elongate porous soot body (5) having a central internal bore. Said soot body is dehydrated, doped, or vitrified, a process during which the soot body is held in a vertical direction inside a treatment oven by means of a holding device (9) comprising an elongate holding body (1) which protrudes into the internal bore of the soot body and is made of a material having a higher softening temperature than quartz glass. The aim of the invention is to create a method which is based on the previously known method and by means of which the purity of the hollow cylinder is maintained during said heating process while requiring little time and material for aftertreating the internal bore.

  • Publication number: 20040107735
Abstract: An optical fiber preform includes a core rod and an overclad tube having an open, distal end dimensioned to enter the mouth of a vertical fiber draw furnace. A plug is fixed in the region of the distal end of the tube, and the core rod is disposed axially inside the overclad tube so that a distal end of the rod is restrained from downward movement by the plug as the tube enters and descends into a hot zone of the draw furnace. The distal end of the tube is heated in the furnace hot zone until the tube and the plug soften and fuse with one another. The tube then collapses onto the core rod to produce a drop from which an optical fiber having desired properties may be drawn.
