  • Publication number: 20170331743
Abstract: Technologies for medium grained adaptive routing include one or more managed network devices coupled to one or more computing nodes via high-speed fabric links. A computing node may transmit a data packet including a destination local identifier (DLID) that identifies the destination computing node. The managed network device determines a static destination port based on the DLID, and determines whether the static destination port is congested. If congested, the managed network device determines a port group based on the DLID and selects a dynamic destination port from the port group. The port group may include two or more destination ports of the managed network device, and port groups may overlap. Port groups may be described by port masks stored in a port group table. The port groups and mappings between DLIDs and port groups may be configured by a fabric manager. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

  • Patent number: 8441922
Abstract: In a network having a computing system interfacing with a storage system via a switch, an average transmit wait count value is compared with a first threshold value. The average transmit wait count value is updated when a switch port has a frame available for transmission but is unable to transmit the frame if a port of the storage system is unable to receive the frame or if another switch port is unable to receive the frame. A congestion message is generated for notifying a management module of congestion at the switch port when the average transmit wait count value reaches the first threshold value. Depending upon the characteristics of the congestion, a notification is sent to the computing system to either only reduce a rate of write operations to reduce congestion, or to reduce both the rate of write operations and a rate of read operations.

  • Patent number: 7388861
Abstract: A system and method for selecting a primary blade in a multi-module fibre channel switch with plural blades is provided. The system includes a state machine for sending exchangeable blade parameter(s) (“EBP”) to the plural blades; and determining if a primary blade flag is set. If the primary blade flag is set, selecting the blade with the EBP priority number. If the primary blade flag is not selected, then selecting a blade with an EBP priority number if the EBP priority number is less than a retained priority number.

  • Patent number: 7230929
Abstract: A method for entering fabric configuration in a fibre channel system for a multi-module fibre channel switch is provided. The method includes determining if a primary blade has been selected for the multi-module switch; sending exchange fabric parameters to internal ports of the multi-module switch; and processing principal switch selection events.

  • Patent number: 6842841
Abstract: A method and system for connecting a host to a tape drive for accessing a tape cartridge in a data storage system having a tape library provided with cartridges and tape drives includes the host requesting a desired cartridge to access. In response to the request, a proxy agent queries the library to determine which of the tape drives are available to receive the desired cartridge. The proxy agent then selects a tape drive from the available tape drives to receive the desired cartridge. The desired cartridge is then mounted into the selected tape drive. An access controller then connects a virtual tape drive associated with the host to the selected tape drive to provide the host with access to the desired cartridge. The selected tape drive may be selected as a function of its location with respect to the storage location of the desired cartridge.

  • Patent number: 6779077
Abstract: Virtual tape libraries are accessed by computer elements such as host computers. A canonical tape module services each tape drive. Each computer element is provided access to at least one logical tape module. Each logical tape module is mapped to a canonical tape module in response to a request to access a tape volume. Thus, each computer element has a logical tape drive capable of accessing any volume on any cartridge in any tape library within the storage system.

  • Publication number: 20030126132
Abstract: A virtual volume management system and method includes a storage area network having multiple disparate types of storage devices and multiple virtual storage volumes available to a user for use in storage and retrieval of user data. The virtual volume management system and method further include a storage pool linked to at least one of the virtual storage volumes, and a controller for automatically allocating at least two of the storage devices to the pool. The controller partitions and concatenates the storage devices of the pool for storage and retrieval of user data.
