Abstract: A trailer hitch adapter is provided for connection either to a trailer hitch ball or to a trailer hitch tongue. The adapter includes a tubular member that defines a housing and a connecting member carried within the housing between a pair of resilient elements to absorb axial shocks and rotational loads imparted by one of the towed vehicle or the towing vehicle to the other vehicle. The adapter is removably connected with a portion of the trailer hitch by means of a pair of retaining pins, to permit its removal and transfer from one vehicle to another, and also to prevent an unauthorized connection of a towed vehicle to a trailer.
