  • Patent number: 6608272
Abstract: The present invention is a rotary switch with illumination capabilities utilizing a light pipe within the rotary switch to carry light from a light source to the outside of the rotary switch. The light source is preferably an LED or incandescent bulb, and the light pipe may be a fiber optic material or a glass tube. In conjunction with the rotary switch is a corresponding knob that includes a lens disposed adjacent the end of the light pipe for dispersing light communicated through the light pipe to a face on the knob. The rotary switch may include multiple lights corresponding to operating conditions of the rotary switch such as nominal and fail, where the operator can determine the condition by the color of light passing through the lens on the knob.

  • Patent number: 5606155
Abstract: A rotary switch is disclosed which has a ferrule, rotor and stator assembly housed within a plastic cylindrically shaped housing. The ends of the housing are uniquely folded to hold the ferrule and stator in end positions within the housing on edges located on the interior wall the housing. The rotor has a shaft which is rotatably mounted in the ferrule for relative movement over the stator. Stationary contacts are provided on the stator, while moveable ball contacts carried by the rotor seat on the stator for displacement relative to the stationary contacts upon turning of the rotor via the shaft. A detent mechanism cooperates with the interior wall of the housing to establish detent positions corresponding with predetermined electrical coupling of the stator contacts by the ball contacts. This housing arrangement provides a relatively simple and inexpensive rotary switch of relatively small sized which has a high switch capacity.

  • Patent number: 5326944
Abstract: A tease-proof rotary switch has a driving shaft which is coupled to a driven shaft through a coupling spring. The driven shaft is connected to a rotating switch assembly. The driving shaft rotates, storing energy in the spring which, in turn, can rotate the driven shaft. The energy stored in the spring may be sufficient to start the rotation of the switch and to seat it in the next stable switch position. Alternatively, the driving shaft can engage an element of the driven shaft to start the rotation which can then be completed to the next stable position by the energy stored in the spring.

  • Patent number: 4910364
Abstract: A novel rotary switch includes metal contact segments integrally molded into annular plastic frame members which segments are then further sealed to prevent passage of flux or other contaminants from reaching the interior of the switch. Further, each contact segment has an arcuate interior contact portion which engages a rotating bridging member on the inner periphery of the arcuate surface. The arcuate segments are spaced together so that the bridging member that conducts signals to the arcuate surface never contacts a plastic surface. A toothed member is provided to cam the bridging member out of contact with one contact segment before making contact with the next adjacent contact segment.

  • Patent number: 4031345
Abstract: A miniature electrical switch including a housing having a cover and a base plate and a switching assembly within the housing. The switching assembly includes a switch actuator, a ball contactor and a spring, together with a contact assembly. A plurality of contacts are engageable by the ball contactor to electrically interconnect contacts connected to a circuit. The contacts are arranged to enable the switch to be used in single-pole double-throw, double-pole double-throw or multiple-pole double-throw modes.

  • Patent number: 3958090
Abstract: A miniature switch assembly includes a switch housing having a cover and end plate and includes a plurality of switch operating rocker arms extending outwardly from the switch cover. Each of the operating rocker arms is rotatably movable between a first closed position and a second open position and includes a spring mounted in the base which biases a ball contactor thereon to selectively bridge a pair of conductor terminals mounted within the housing to complete the switch action. Each pair of the conductor terminals is secured to the end plate which in turn is secured to the switch cover to hold the switch assembly in assembled relationship.
