Publication number: 20210109065Abstract: A well tool for use within a borehole with borehole fluid. The well tool may include a body, an acoustic velocity transducer, a reflector plate, and a processor. The body may include a fluid conduit extending between a flow inlet and a flow outlet. The flow inlet and the flow outlet may be positioned on an exterior of the body to allow the borehole fluid to pass through the fluid conduit. The acoustic velocity sensor may be positioned within the fluid conduit and configured to generate and receive an acoustic pulse. The reflector plate may be positioned within the fluid conduit such that the pulse is reflected off of the reflector plate back to the acoustic velocity transducer. The processor may be programmed to determine an acoustic velocity of the borehole fluid based on a return time of the pulse reflected back from the reflector plate.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2019Publication date: April 15, 2021Applicant: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Ricardo Ortiz, Grant Phillip Goodyear

Patent number: 10077652Abstract: A method of modulating information on pressure fluctuations transmitted via a tubular string can include applying pressure to a piston, thereby axially displacing the piston, axially displacing and rotating an intermediate sleeve in response to the piston displacement, rotating an output member in response to the axial displacement and rotation of the intermediate sleeve, and rotating a variable flow restrictor rotor relative to a stator, the rotor being connected to the output member. A mud pulser can include a variable flow restrictor, and an actuator which operates the flow restrictor and modulates information on pressure fluctuations produced by the flow restrictor, the actuator including a piston which displaces axially in response to a pressure differential, an intermediate sleeve which is both rotated and displaced axially by the piston, and an output member which is rotated by both rotation and axial displacement of the intermediate sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2012Date of Patent: September 18, 2018Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Ricardo Ortiz, Mark Sitka

Patent number: 9631480Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods may operate to emit acoustic pulses into a drilling fluid in a well bore, using a first acoustic transducer in a downhole tool, and detecting the acoustic pulses after reflection from the wall of the well bore, using a second acoustic transducer in the downhole tool. The faces of the first and second acoustic transducers are non-parallel. Further activities include emitting additional acoustic pulses into the drilling fluid using the second acoustic transducer, and detecting them using the second acoustic transducer. The acoustic velocity of the drilling fluid can be determined based on respective travel times. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are described.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2009Date of Patent: April 25, 2017Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventors: Paul Cooper, Kristopher V Sherrill, Ricardo Ortiz, Daniel Flores, Batakrishna Mandal

Patent number: 9268059Abstract: A downhole measurement apparatus includes a tool body supporting a logging tool. The logging tool includes a detector outsert coupled into and exposed through an exterior pocket of the tool body to position the outer surface of the outsert adjacent or in close proximity to the outer diameter of the tool body. A stabilizer or off-center stabilizer may be provided to further deflect the outsert portion of the logging tool toward an earth formation to increase detector proximity to the formation. Radial and axial distances can be calibrated and maintained across multiple different tool collars.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2014Date of Patent: February 23, 2016Assignee: HALLIBURTON ENERGY SERVICES, INC.Inventors: Ricardo Ortiz, Michael Dewayne Finke, Kristopher V. Patent number: 7100385Abstract: To improve the thermal management of an enclosure for electrical equipment or the like, one or more wall-mounted panels are provided. An air-filled space between each panel and the adjacent wall, door, or ceiling has insulative behavior when the air in the space is stagnant. Accordingly, thermal exchange through the wall, etc. is impeded. When the air in the air-filled space is circulated, thermal exchange is permitted.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2004Date of Patent: September 5, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Thomas Francis Craft, Jr., Ricardo Ortiz
