    Abstract: Systems and methods for providing respiratory pacing using a closed-loop adaptive controller that can self-adjust in real-time to meet metabolic needs of a subject are provided. The controller can use an adaptive pattern generator/pattern shaper architecture that can autonomously generate a desired ventilatory pattern in response to dynamic changes in arterial carbon dioxide levels and, based on a learning algorithm or machine learning, can modulate stimulation intensity and cycle duration to evoke the desired ventilatory pattern.
