Patent number: 9633518Abstract: A system for wagering during a wagering period having a wagering base with a first plurality of pools each with an outcome accessed by an input wager. A plurality of terminals is provided at which wagers are input, each directed to access an outcome in one of the pools. A processing system is configured to process the input wagers in a manner whereby each input wager either: a) accesses; or b) fails to access an outcome. The processing system is further configured so that there is an initial pre-assigned probability of accessing the outcome of each pool through an input wager. The processing system is further configured to identify a collective return by determining the number of input wagers that have accessed an outcome in a particular pool. The processing system is further configured to change the wagering base after the wagering period has begun and before the wagering period is concluded based upon one or more system operating parameters detected during the wagering period.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2014Date of Patent: April 25, 2017Inventors: Richard A. Herbert, William T. Geoghegan

Patent number: 9218721Abstract: A method of, and system for, wagering. The method includes the step of providing a random number generator that has a wagering base that is derived at least in part from the outcome of at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game that has previously been completed. Certain information in the wagering base is based at least in part on the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game and is accessible through an input wager, with the probability of accessing the certain information in the wagering base through an input wager being different. Input wagers are directed to the random number generator during the wagering period from each of multiple locations. Between when preliminary and final return amounts are identified for a first input wager that accesses the certain information, based at least in part upon the number of input wagers that have accessed the certain information, an updated return amount is identified for the first input wager.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2014Date of Patent: December 22, 2015Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20150018085Abstract: A wagering system having a wagering base with different information based upon the outcome of an event that has already taken place; a first input wagering terminal for directing input wagers to access certain of the different information; and a processor for determining whether an input wager accesses the certain information. The first input wagering terminal and processor are configured to make available to a bettor at the first input wagering terminal a first input wager option based upon pre-defined criteria through which a bettor directs an input wager to access first of the different information in the wagering base. The pre-defined criteria is derived from at least one of data relating directly or indirectly to the event or to betting activity conducted through the wagering system.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 10, 2014Publication date: January 15, 2015Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20140274302Abstract: A wagering system having a processor operatively connected to a random number generator that has a wagering base with at least first and second different information that is each accessed by an input wager. The random number generator is configured so that a probability of accessing the first information through an input wager is higher than a probability of accessing the second information. The processor is programmed to identify: a) one return for an input wager that accesses the first information; and b) a second higher return for an input wager that accesses the second information. The processor is programmed to factor in a higher percentage commission for one of the first and second returns than a percentage commission for the one return.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20140274343Abstract: A wagering system having a wagering base with information therein. A plurality of terminals make up a Community Play grouping. At least one processor is programmed to determine whether any wager input at any of the terminals in the Community Play grouping accessed information in the wagering base. The at least one processor additionally identifies a return for each of the players that input a wager at the Community Play grouping for a predetermined game over a predetermined time period in the event that any wager made in the Community Play grouping accessed the information. The return for each of the players is determined in relationship to the size of the wager input by each player.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20140274350Abstract: A progressive wagering system having at least one processor and a wagering base with information. Wagers are input from a plurality of terminals to create a first pool and to access the information in the wagering base. The at least one processor is programmed to: (a) identify wagers that have accessed information in the wagering base; and (b) identify a return for each input wager accessing the information in the wagering base. The plurality of terminals are configured to allow selective inputting of at least a part of an input wager to a second pool. The at least one processor is programmed to award a payout to a first player from the second pool based upon criteria related to the first player's activity related to the first pool.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2014Publication date: September 18, 2014Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20140106857Abstract: A betting system with a processor that receives a wagering input from a user and in response to the wagering input randomly generates different outcomes with: a) different probabilities; and b) no payout or different payouts. The processor triggers a bonus round based on one or more of the outcomes generated. A first display area at which first information, including at least some of the outcomes generated in response to the wagering input, is viewable by a user. The first information remains viewable by a user while a user is participating in the bonus round. The processor is configured so that a user can continue to make wagering inputs to the processor without terminating the bonus round, once triggered, and view the first information at the first display area while participating in the bonus round.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2013Publication date: April 17, 2014Inventors: Richard A. Herbert, William T. Geoghegan

Patent number: 8500530Abstract: A wagering system has a processor through which information regarding a plurality of competing contestants in a horse or dog race is made available to entities betting on the outcome of the race to seek a payout from a wagering pool. The information for at least one of the competing contestants is prepared based upon selected handicapping criteria to give the at least one of the competing contestants a time adjusted race identity. An input is provided for wagers to be placed on the race. The outcome of the race for wagering purposes is determined using the time adjusted race identity for the at least one of the competing contestants.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2011Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Inventor: Richard A. Publication number: 20080227517Abstract: A wagering apparatus having an input at which a user can make at least one wager on the outcome of first and second different events, each with different outcomes equated to value. A processor causes the outcomes to be identified in response to the making of a wager through the input. Information relating to the events is visually observable on a display screen. The information includes at least information relating to the outcomes of the events. The information relating to the first and second outcomes is independently identifiable upon the display screen by a user.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2007Publication date: September 18, 2008Inventors: John Richard O'Neal, Martin Daniel Higgins, Richard A. Patent number: 6152822Abstract: A method of wagering, including the steps of providing a random number generator that has a wagering base which is randomly accessed by an input wager, using as at least a part of the wagering base the outcome of at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game that has been completed, pre-assigning a probability value to the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game and programming the random number generator so that the probability of accessing the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game in the random number generator through an input wager identifying the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game is correlated to the probability value, directing an input wager identifying the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game to the random number generator, and identifying a return for an input wager identifying the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alai game that accesses the outcome of the at least one horse/dog race or jai alaiType: GrantFiled: January 15, 1998Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 5240459Abstract: A means and method for modifying the width of a racing surface of a racetrack having a movable barrier positioned between a stationary outer barrier and a stationary inner barrier, the movable barrier comprising pylons having a removable tethering means connecting the movable barrier to the inner stationary barrier, and also having a limiting means to enable the user to place the movable pylons in generally the same position prior to the beginning of every race. During the course of the race, the user will move the movable pylons off of the racing surface, thus increasing the width of the racing surface available to the horse and driver. In another embodiment, an inner lane of approximately 8-10 feet exists to increase the width of the racing surface during the stretch portion of the race.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1992Date of Patent: August 31, 1993Inventor: Richard A.
