Patent number: 7251816Abstract: A method for increasing performance of selected poll applications without recompilation. In one embodiment, the method is comprised of assigning the name of a library as a value for an environment variable in a software application. The library is comprised of software code for emulating a system call. The method is further comprised of launching the software application. The launching causes invocation of a loader associated with the software application. The method is further comprised of preloading the library into the software application. The preloading performed by the loader. The method is further comprised of redirecting the software application to invoke an alternative mechanism when the software application requests a system call. The invocation of the alternative mechanism implements the library as the system call.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2002Date of Patent: July 31, 2007Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 6965411Abstract: Apparatus for remotely controlling the positioner of a camera head. At least one hydraulically-actuated positioner for rotating the camera head with respect to an axis is fixed to the camera head and to a camera support device, such as a camera boom. The positioner includes an output shaft whose angular displacement is responsive to fluid flows transmitted through a pair of associated hydraulic lines. A valve is associated with each positioner and controls the flow of fluid within the pair of positioner hydraulic lines. A control unit receives and processes inputs provided by a camera operator (observing the camera's field-of-view on a monitor) and outputs generated by the system so that the necessary adjustments may be controlled by the valves to assume smooth camera movements in either an aquatic environment or otherwise.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1999Date of Patent: November 15, 2005Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 6714918Abstract: A system for detecting fraudulent transactions is disclosed. The system breaks the transaction down into its component parameters. A first score is computed depending on the propensity of the transacted commodity to be involved in fraud. A second score is computed as a function of the authentication of the remaining parameters of the transaction. A total fraud score is computed from the first score and the second score and compared against a fraud threshold to determine the likelihood of the transaction being fraudulent.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2002Date of Patent: March 30, 2004Assignee: Access Business Group International LLCInventors: James M. Patent number: 6371488Abstract: A seal system for a motor pump unit includes a primary and a plurality of backup seals mounted in series within a seal housing. The primary seal is of a hydrostatic type and each of the backup seals is of a normally closed hydrodynamic type. Each of the primary and backup seals has a secondary seal between an axially movable seal ring thereof and the fixed seal housing, and at least one of these secondary seals is a spring-loaded, split piston ring seal. Two of the backup seals are of the Rayleigh type, where the Rayleigh pockets are formed in the seal runner, and the sealing dam is formed on the axially movable seal ring. An insert is provided in the runner of one of the backup seals, which insert is formed from a relatively harder material than the material forming the sealing dam. The other Rayleigh-type backup seal has pumping grooves extending downwardly and inwardly through the runner and toward the shaft to pump liquid into the Rayleigh pockets to ensure proper seal operation.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1999Date of Patent: April 16, 2002Inventors: George E. Patent number: 6020394Abstract: A process for preparing a modified polyalkylene, preferably polyethylene or polypropylene, polymer product is described. The process involves treating the polymer in an impregnation step with UV radiation in the presence of a carbonyl bearing photoinitiator species and a crosslinking species. The radiation may take place in a gaseous or liquid environment which is substantially free of oxygen gas but which comprises at least one of the species.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1998Date of Patent: February 1, 2000Assignee: Celgard LLCInventors: Richard A. Patent number: 5784054Abstract: An effective seal for protecting a touchscreen and associated electronics from liquid infiltration, the seal being placed between the housing and the surface of the touchscreen and configured to surround the useful touchscreen area. The seal is preferably formed of a closed cell foam covered on the surface which contacts the touchscreen surface with a liquid impervious barrier, or an expanded polymer such as expanded PTFE. The seal may be secured to the bezel edge by a transfer adhesive coating applied to the bezel edge, except for a relatively thin edge strip along the inner edge of the bezel end, so that substantially no adhesive is present on a free surface of the seal body proximate to the window aperture of the bezel. Preferably, a smooth surface is provided for adhering the seal body to the bezel. The seal body may be compressed between the bezel and touchscreen surface to effect a seal.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1996Date of Patent: July 21, 1998Assignee: Elo ToughSystems, Inc.Inventors: Donald B. Patent number: 5516118Abstract: A seal for sealing between a bidirectionally rotating shaft rotatable in the forward and reverse directions and having a sealing surface thereon located in a pressurized housing containing the shaft. A seal ring mounted in the housing for movement toward and away from the shaft sealing surface and having a high pressure side, a low pressure side, a seal face opposed to the shaft seal surface and an outer face remote from the seal face and exposed to the pressure in the housing. Resilient elements urge the seal ring toward the sealing surface of the shaft. Hydrodynamic elements in the form of a plurality of spaced recesses in the seal face of the seal ring and formed so as to produce negative hydrodynamic lift in the recess and urge the seal ring toward the sealing surface of the rotating shaft during forward rotation thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1993Date of Patent: May 14, 1996Assignee: Stein Seal CompanyInventor: Richard A. Patent number: 5381898Abstract: A protector device for protecting paper rolls during transport comprises an integrally formed synthetic plastic body, the body including a spacer column and a substantially planar, plate-like support formation extending transversely from the spacer column. In order to protect paper rolls during transport, the rolls can be spaced from one another by positioning the spacer column of a protector device between each pair of adjacent paper rolls positioned on the transport vehicle, the column being held in position by the support formation resting on the end of at least one of two adjacent paper rolls. The operative outer face of the support formation has corner formations projecting therefrom, the formations providing for the location of tying ropes for tying the paper rolls on the transport vehicle, thus preventing any damage that could otherwise be caused to the paper rolls by the tying ropes, if the protection device is not utilized.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1993Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Inventor: Richard A. Patent number: 4482684Abstract: This invention relates to the use of an organic compound which is a polymerization inhibitor in aqueous suspension polymerization systems for making polymers from olefinic monomers. The inhibitor is added to the aqueous medium prior to the start of or during the reaction. Its use allows a wide range of control throughout the increased reaction rate region and substantially reduces the tailpeak encountered during the aqueous suspension polymerization of olefinic monomers. One example of a suitable inhibitor is 2,2'- methylene bis (4,6-di-tertiary butylphenol).Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1982Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Assignee: The B. F.
