  • Patent number: 4115215
Abstract: A process for purifying aluminum alloys comprises providing molten aluminum alloy in a container having a porous wall therein capable of containing molten aluminum in the container and being permeable by the molten electrolyte. Aluminum is electrolytically transported through the porous wall to a cathode thereby substantially separating the aluminum from alloying constituents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 23, 1977
Date of Patent: September 19, 1978
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Subodh K. Das, C. Norman Cochran, Richard A. Milito, Robert M. Mazgaj, Walter W. Hill
  • Patent number: 4053303
Abstract: Aluminum-silicon alloys are formed by bringing a mix containing sources of alumina, silica and carbon to a temperature in the range of 1500.degree. and 1600.degree. C to form silicon carbide and carbon monoxide. The mix containing the silicon carbide is then brought to a temperature in the range of 1600.degree. to 1900.degree. C to form aluminum oxycarbide and carbon monoxide. Thereafter, the mix containing the silicon carbide and aluminum oxycarbide is brought to a temperature in the range of 1950.degree. to 2200.degree. C to produce an aluminum-silicon alloy.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 6, 1976
Date of Patent: October 11, 1977
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: C. Norman Cochran, Subodh K. Das, Richard A. Milito
  • Patent number: 4046558
Abstract: A method of producing an aluminum-silicon type alloy from alumina-silica bearing materials comprises providing the silica and alumina bearing materials in a mix having a weight ratio of silica to alumina in the range of 0.5 to 1.1. The method further comprises providing a source of carbonaceous material in the mix and carbothermically reducing it to form the aluminum-silicon alloy.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 22, 1976
Date of Patent: September 6, 1977
    Assignee: Aluminum Company of America
Inventors: Subodh K. Das, Richard A. Milito
