  • Patent number: 4936345
Abstract: A hydraulic control apparatus, having a master cylinder, a slave cylinder and a conduit connecting the master cylinder to the slave cylinder, is made of separate modular units interconnectable by leakproof connectors. The apparatus is prefilled with hydraulic fluid while the separate modular units are interconnected, and after filling the separate modular units are disconnected and shipped to a user, unconnected but filled with hydraulic fluid. Alternatively, the separate modular units may be individually filled with hydraulic fluid, and shipped to a user unconnected but each filled with hydraulic fluid. After installation on a utilization device, for example a motor vehicle, the complementary connector members are reconnected for placing the individual modular units in hydraulic fluid communication. The connectors take the form of complementary members which are arranged to open fluid passageway during connection.

  • Patent number: 4911276
Abstract: A method of assembling a motor vehicle in which a multicontact switch is provided on the input rod of the master cylinder of a prefilled master and slave cylinder hydraulic apparatus; the master cylinder is positioned in the engine compartment of a vehicle and the input rod, with the switch mounted thereon, is passed from the engine compartment through an aperture in the firewall of the vehicle to position the input rod and switch in the passenger compartment of the vehicle and position the master cylinder housing adjacent the fire wall; the master cylinder is secured to the fire wall; and the plug of a wiring harness including several electrical vehicle circuits is plugged into a multiple contact outlet socket on the switch so as to provide a plurality of electrical control systems for the vehicle respectively controlled by the contacts of the switch. For example, the switch contacts may control a cruise control disconnect circuit, an electronic fuel injection circuit, and an ignition interlock circuit.

  • Patent number: 4909131
Abstract: A hydraulic master cylinder formed by telescopically fastening together a pair of cylinder housings to form a cylinder. A piston in the cylinder is operative to transfer hydraulic fluid to a slave cylinder connected to the master cylinder. The pressure or power stroke of the piston is effected by exerting a pull on the piston by a pull cable attached to one side of the piston. A body, attached to one of the cylinder housing, provides a reservoir for hydraulic fluids. A cap on the reservoir closes a fluid filling opening. Expansion bellows in the reservoir accommodates changes in the fluid level in the reservoir as the piston is being reciprocated. The bellows is connected to the cap so as to be removed as a unit with the cap when the reservoir is being filled.

  • Patent number: 4878041
Abstract: An electrical switch operated by the input member of a hydraulic master cylinder and controlling the stop signal lights of a motor vehicle, when associated with the master cylinder of a hydraulic brake system, and/or controlling a cruise control disconnect circuit. When associated with the master cylinder of a clutch hydraulic control system, the switch is adapted to close an interlock circuit allowing the motor vehicle driver to start the engine only when the clutch is fully released, and to operate a cruise control disconnect circuit upon small displacement of the input member from its home position.

  • Patent number: 4856416
Abstract: A hydraulic cylinder and the method of making such hydraulic cylinder of a tubular sleeve and a housing of dissimilar material cast or molded around the sleeve. The sleeve is provided at least at one end with a portion projecting into the material of the housing, such projection being preferably in the form of an annular bead with a corresponding internally disposed groove. The other end of the sleeve has an internally radially projecting flange projecting into the material of the housing, and the elastomeric O-ring is disposed at the junction between the internal surface of the flange and the surface of the sleeve bore to provide a seal for the pressure end of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4750878
Abstract: A retainer bushing for connecting a male member such as a shaft, rod or pin, for example the coupling pin of a motor vehicle clutch pedal, to a mechanical component having a bore accepting the shaft, rod or pin in the bore, for example the input member of an hydraulic master cylinder hydraulically connected to a slave cylinder actuating a clutch release mechanism. The retainer bushing has a flange at one end and one or more longitudinally projecting tangs at the other end. A closure wall is integrally formed at the other end of the retainer bushing. Each tang, which is elastically deflectable outwardly and inwardly, has a radially inwardly directed abutment surface for engagement with the other end of the bore when the flange is engaged at one end thereof, and an inwardly radially directed prong for engagement in a peripheral groove formed in the pin.

  • Patent number: 4719444
Abstract: A switch mounted on the linearly displaceable input member of a hydraulic master cylinder and operable by displacement of the input member relative to the cylinder. An end of the switch housing engages the end of the cylinder through which the input member projects and the engaged surfaces are correspondingly spherically shaped to permit limited swiveling motion of the input member relative to the cylinder without affecting the operation of the switch.

  • Patent number: 4705151
Abstract: An interlocking proximity switching device operated by the reciprocating member assembly of a hydraulic slave cylinder controlling the operation of the release mechanism of a motor vehicle mechanical clutch, the slave cylinder being hydraulically connected to a master cylinder having an input member operable by the motor vehicle clutch pedal. The switching device is adapted to close the motor vehicle starter relay circuit for a position of the slave cylinder output member, piston and/or push-rod, corresponding to full release of the clutch, such that the clutch must be fully released in order to allow starting the motor vehicle engine. Preferably, the switching device takes the form of a proximity transducer and of an appropriate circuitry for detecting full release of the clutch mechanism, irrespective of the amount of wear of the clutch.

  • Patent number: 4624290
Abstract: A hydraulic control apparatus, more particularly for operating a motor vehicle clutch release mechanism, comprising a master cylinder, a slave cylinder and a conduit connecting the master cylinder to the slave cylinder. A leakproof quick-connect connector is placed between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder, preferably at the end of the conduit where it connects to the master cylinder or the slave cylinder, one member of the connector forming part of the master cylinder or slave cylinder. The apparatus, after assembly, is filled with hydraulic fluid, the two members of the connector being held momentarily engaged. After filling, the connector is broken, and the filled components are shipped to a user. After installation of the apparatus for operation of a mechanism such as a clutch release mechanism, the two connector members are reconnected, and the connector members having been provided with a one-way locking member can no longer be separated such as to preserve the integrity of the system.

The apparatus is in the form of separate modular units which are separately filled with hydraulic fluid, and the filled modular units are shipped unconnected to a user. • Patent number: 4557361
Abstract: A shipping and installation restraining strap for an actuator such as the hydraulic slave cylinder of a motor vehicle clutch actuating apparatus. The strap comprises a retaining member in the form of a cylindrical cap installed on the end of the actuator output rod and having a substantially hemispherical end portion engaged in a corresponding partially spherical concave recess in the member operated by the actuator, such as the clutch release lever. The other end of the strips is attached to a non-movable portion of the actuator. Each strip has a portion of reduced strength such as to break upon first operation of the actuator. The cylindrical cap is optionally provided with a radially extending disc-like flange seal resiliently engaged with the surface of the clutch actuating lever beyond the edge of the recess, such as to prevent introduction of dirt in the recess.

  • Patent number: 4516748
Abstract: A structure for rapid coupling of a housing, such as the housing of a hydraulic cylinder, to a bifurcated support member simply by pushing the housing between the bifurcated portions of the support member. The housing is provided with a generally U-shaped mounting clip having springingly spreadable legs provided each with an abutment engaging a corresponding abutment on each of the bifurcated portions of the support member. As the clip-provided housing is pushed between the bifurcated portions of the support member, the clip legs spread sufficiently to permit passage of each of the bifurcated portions of the support member and, once the housing is properly seated and located, the clip legs snap back to their original position engaging their abutment with the abutment provided on the bifurcated portions of the support member.
