  • Patent number: 6059206
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process and apparatus for the separation of materials from within fluorescent lamps and other mercury containing commercial elements. The process and apparatus can separate materials of different compositions by non-chemical means into easily treatable segments without causing significant introduction of wastes (especially mercury waste) into the environment during physical separation. This invention operates by repeatedly crushing and breaking the original article (e.g., the fluorescent lamp) into progressively smaller pieces under controlled circumstances and controlled air pressure so that their various component materials are separately collected and these separately collected components may be individually processed (recycled or purified) without significant introduction of mercury into the environment.

  • Patent number: 5945356
Abstract: A reinforcing web has two elongated reinforcing layers. Each reinforcing layer consists of parallel fiber segments which are inclined to the longitudinal axis of the respective layer at an angle of 30 to 85 degrees. To make the web, adhesive with a protective covering is applied to one surface of an elongated band. The band consists of fibers which run parallel to the longitudinal axis of the band. The coated band is wound onto a take-off reel which travels along an endless track. The track is located next to a pair of supports and can rotate 90 degrees to either side of a middle position in which the track is parallel to the supports. The track is swivelled from the middle position through an angle which is a function of the desired orientations of the fiber segments. The take-off reel then begins to move along the track, and the band is deposited on the supports as the reel moves. A take-up reel which travels with the take-off reel winds up the protective covering of the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5619992
Abstract: A protective sheath for a pulse oximetry sensor. The sheath covers the sensor and inhibits contamination thereof during use. The sheath obviates the need to clean the pulse oximetry sensor after each use while reducing the likelihood of cross-patient contamination. The sheath allows the use of reusable pulse oximetry sensors and thus significantly reduces the overall costs of such sensors per use.

  • Patent number: 4860254
Abstract: A volatile semiconductor memory module (RAM) is combined with a permanent memory based on an electrically polarizable, preferably ferroelectric, layer within an integrated monolithic module in such a manner that, as a result of a STORE command, the information present in the semiconductor memory is permanently stored by polarization of selected regions of the electrically polarizable layer. In the same way the permanently stored information can be read out again as a result of a RECALL command and returned to the semiconductor memory. Preferably, a ferroelectrically polarizable layer 11 is applied to the semiconductor memory, which layer, in the same way as the semiconductor memory, is provided on its upper side and underside with word and bit lines in the form of strip electrodes, 9,12. The strip electrode system 9 on the underside of the ferroelectric layer 11 simultaneously forms the word or bit line system of the semiconductor memory facing the surface.
