  • Publication number: 20130161209
Abstract: A wallboard joint compound package is provided, including a container defining an interior space and configured for being sealed, a first component of ready-mixed joint compound being disposed in the interior space to a level which leaves a pre-determined head space, and an upper surface of the component is defined in the container. A second component is provided, including water, and is placed in the interior space upon the upper surface, such that the first and second components remain substantially distinct prior to opening of the container.

  • Publication number: 20120171772
Abstract: At least one of these or other problems is reduced using a building material that is uniquely identifiable. A method of making an identifiable gypsum-based building product includes selecting a tagging material occurring naturally in a component of the building material and choosing a carrier substance having a high concentration of the tagging material. By selecting an amount of the carrier substance and adding it to the building material, a building product having a unique product characteristic is created. In a second embodiment of the invention, a second tagging material is combined with the first tagging material to create a unique product. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a supplemental amount of the tagging material is added to the gypsum-based composition in addition to the carrier substance. Some tagging materials are useful in a gypsum-based composition to produce a visual confirmation of the presence of the tagging material.

  • Patent number: 6673144
Abstract: The present invention provides a low dusting joint compound comprising a filler, a binder, a thickener and one or more synthetic polymeric waxes that are at least slightly soluble in water and are solid at room temperature. Preferably the wax includes a high molecular weight polyethylene glycol or methoxy polyethylene glycol having an average melting point of from about 80° F. (27° F.) to about 150° F. (80° C.). These additives impart low dusting properties without a sticky or oily feel. High molecular weight synthetic waxes also act as an internal binder to hold the joint compound together and improves paint gloss retention. The invention results in a joint compound with improved properties for drywall finishing.

  • Patent number: 6379458
Abstract: A set accelerator for at least one of accelerating the hydration rate and reducing the set time of an aqueous slurry of calcium sulfate hemihydrate is described. The set accelerator consists of a mixture of ground calcium sulfate dihydrate and zinc sulfate material. Aluminum sulfate material is an optional component of the set accelerator. The set accelerator is particularly useful in accelerating the hydration rates of sprayable plasters. A fluid form of the set accelerator may be made by suspending the solids in water. The fluid form is advantageously used in ready mixed setting type joint compounds.

  • Patent number: 6228163
Abstract: A two part joint compound which sets by hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate to gypsum and is clay-free. One part includes an in-situ acidic acrylate copolymer thickener (i.e., an associative thickener) with the calcium sulfate hemihydrate, along with a non-calcium bearing phosphate set preventer. The first part contains water, but remains unset for at least 175 days. The second part includes a set initiator compound having a cation with a log K value greater than calcium ions. The second part is mixed with the first part when setting is desired.

  • Patent number: 5935102
Abstract: A steerable catheter includes control handle having a generally tubular housing with a longitudinal slot therein in which an axially or longitudinally movable two-part slideblock resides, and a generally cylindrical, rotatably mounted thumbwheel surrounding a distal portion of the tubular housing, for controlling the axial translation of the slideblock. The pullwire passes into the distal end of the control handle and is only secured to the proximal part of the two-part slideblock so as to prevent the user from placing the pullwire under compression. A tip radius adjusting wire is attached to and extends distally from a slide actuator in the control handle into and through the main catheter shaft portion. The free distal end of the tip radius adjusting wire is selectably locatable at different positions. The radius of curvature of the tip portion, when deflected, depends upon how far distally into the deflectable tip portion the radius adjusting wire has been advanced by the user.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for minimizing the buildup of set gypsum on a tool used to apply a calcium sulfate hemihydrate-containing composition to a surface as well as to a method for cleaning a tool having set gypsum deposited thereon. The method for cleaning a tool having set gypsum deposited thereon comprises the steps of (a) contacting the tool with a cleaning solution having a pH of less than about 7, said cleaning solution which comprises a non-calcium phosphate, water, and, optionally, a pH modifier; (b) optionally agitating the solution; (c) removing the tool from the cleaning solution; and (d) rinsing the tool with water. The method for minimizing the buildup of set gypsum on a tool further comprises step (e) using the tool to apply a calcium sulfate hemihydrate-containing composition. An additional step (f), flushing the tool with water, may also be employed.
