  • Patent number: 6582284
Abstract: A method of superfinishing the cylindrical surface of a part which is intended to be mounted in circular guides and to be moved in translation along its axis relative to the guides places an abrasive applicator wheel so that its axis is perpendicular to the axis of the part and its lateral surface is pressed against the cylindrical surface. The wheel is driven in rotation about its axis and the part and/or the wheel is driven simultaneously by movement in translation along the axis of the part and rotation about the axis at speeds such that the whole of the cylindrical surface is abrasively machined longitudinally along a helical trace whose successive turns overlap. Applications include steering racks for automobiles, for example.

  • Patent number: 6454638
Abstract: A machine for grinding cylindrical bearing surfaces on parts, in particular journals and/or crank pins on crankshafts, using an abrasive belt, includes a support on which three abrasive belt clamping members are mounted in a triangle and mobile in directions that converge toward the axis of the bearing surface to be ground. Each clamping member carries at least one applicator shoe conformed to press the abrasive belt against the bearing surface along a surface essentially limited to a generatrix parallel to the axis of the bearing surface. The shoe is preferably made from an elastomer having a Shore hardness at most equal to 100 and has a cylindrically curved applicator surface with a radius of curvature less than the radius of curvature of the bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 6250999
Abstract: Lapping machine comprising a revolving turret (11) carrying at least several laps (13 to 17) that can be brought selectively into the machining position so that the laps can machine, in turn, one and the same cylindrical internal surface of a component. The laps comprise at least one expansion lap (17) and several progressive laps (15). The expansion lap (17) preferably has a stationary connector part (20) on its non-rotating part that can be coupled automatically to a moving connector part (21) when the expansion lap is in the machining position.

  • Patent number: 6001006
Abstract: A machine for machining internal surfaces of axisymmetric workpieces with an abrasive strip. The machine includes a roller for pressing the abrasive strip against a surface of the workpiece that is to be machined. The workpiece rotates about an axis, and the roller rotates about an axis parallel to the axis of the workpiece. The machine also includes a pulley positioned on either side of the roller, for guiding the abrasive strip to the roller and holding the abrasive strip in position relative to the roller. The abrasive is driven continuously over the roller during machining, to renew the abrasive where the roller presses the abrasive strip against the surface of the workpiece. The roller and pulleys can be moved oointo, out of, and within a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5984767
Abstract: A machining assembly consisting of first and second pivotal jaws opposing each other. A clamping arrangement is provided for clamping the jaws and to apply a flexible strip of abrasive material against the machined surface. The first jaw containing a shoe element having a rigid pressure surface. The second jaw carries two reaction members. The second jaw presses the strip of abrasive material against the bearing surface. The second jaw carries two measuring tips movably mounted thereon for measuring the bearing surface. A displacement arrangement for separating the measuring tips apart when said jaws are unclamped and bringing these tips together when said jaws are clamped.
