  • Publication number: 20080007872
Abstract: A process for fabricating sliders with one or more sacrificial structures (extensions) that facilitate lapping to create the air-bearing surface (ABS) is described. Prior to separating individual sliders from a wafer, a mask outlines a sacrificial extension around portions of the magnetic transducer elements that are nearest the predetermined plane which will become the ABS. The sacrificial extension extends below the predetermined ABS plane. When the sliders are individually separated by DRIE, the shape of the mask including the sacrificial extension is projected down into and along the slider body. In one embodiment, a channel is disposed on the side of the slider opposite the ABS to provide space for the sacrificial extension of the adjacent slider and allow the sliders to be spaced closer together on the wafer surface for more efficient use of the wafer during head fabrication.

  • Publication number: 20070254559
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention pertain to reducing agglomeration of particles while manufacturing a lapping plate using an oil-based slurry. According to one embodiment, an oil-based slurry with particles of a known size is applied to a lapping plate. The oil-based slurry is ultrasonically mixed while applying the oil-based slurry to the lapping plate in order to reduce agglomeration of the particles.

  • Publication number: 20070123150
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention pertain to a evaluating the quality of a lapping plate. In one embodiment, information that indicates the quality of a lapping plate is received while the lapping plate is being used to lap a slider, and the information is used to evaluate the quality of the lapping plate while the lapping plate is being used to lap the slider.

  • Publication number: 20070123149
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention pertain to a evaluating the quality of a lapping plate. In one embodiment, an information receiver receives information while the lapping plate is being used to lap a slider. The information indicates the quality of a lapping plate. A quality determiner that evaluates the quality of the lapping plate based on the information while the lapping plate is being used to lap the slider.

  • Publication number: 20070025885
Abstract: A microtitre plate having a relieved perimeter includes a plate defining a plurality of wells and the perimeter of the plate is horizontally relieved. Alternatively, a microtitre plate may include a base and a holding section extending from the base. The holding section defines a plurality of wells and the perimeter thereof being horizontally relieved.

  • Publication number: 20050126706
Abstract: Methods of improving the adhesive characteristics of an adhesive resin composition and the use of the adhesive for bonding substrate materials, such as ceramic materials and manufacturing tools, are described. The adhesive composition includes a resist adhesive resin and a solvent having a boiling point in the range of about 30° C. to about 80° C. The methods and the adhesive composition find utility in hard disk drive applications, such as in the manufacture of sliders for hard disk drives.

  • Publication number: 20050125995
Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus for handling workpieces such as hard disk drive sliders during a debonding process uses a fixture having two sets of finger-like projections that are interleaved. The sets are movable relative to each other to space apart the sliders after they are processed from their original row configuration. The post-processing separation is required to properly debond the sliders. The fingers on each set are closely interleaved to reduce the amount of displacement required to adequately separate the sliders for debonding. After the sliders are displaced, they are directly debonded into the inspection trays. This design eliminates the need for manual handling of the workpieces during these phases of manufacturing.

  • Publication number: 20050030669
Abstract: A process for fabricating sliders with one or more sacrificial structures (extensions) that facilitate lapping to create the air-bearing surface (ABS) is described. Prior to separating individual sliders from a wafer, a mask of material that is not removable by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) is patterned on the surface of the sliders. The mask outlines a sacrificial extension around portions of the magnetic transducer elements that are nearest the predetermined plane which will become the ABS. The sacrificial extension makes the surface of the slider which will be lapped non-planar. The sacrificial extension extends below the predetermined ABS plane. When the sliders are individually separated by DRIE, the shape of the mask including the sacrificial extension is projected down into and along the slider body.

  • Patent number: 6556380
Abstract: A trapezoidal shaped silicon slider is described in the present invention. The slider has a first parallel surface larger than a second parallel surface, thereby generating a built-in positive pitch with respect to a recording medium when the slider is incorporated into a hard disk drive. The slider further includes round edges at the first parallel surface, longitudinal holes within its body, non-planar slanted side surfaces, and a rounded leading edge. The silicon, trapezoidal slider is fabricated using a deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) technique.
